WATER-MOTOR.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. GILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Motors; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to water-motors, and
has for its objects the improvements in the details of construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth and explained, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view of my improved impact water-motor, partially in elevation and partially in section. Fig. 2 is a detailview showing a view of one of the impact buckets in ele- Fig. 3 is a top or plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing a modified construction of my improved bucket in elevation. Fig. 5 is a top or plan view of the same. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of the same on the line x-x in Fig. 5.
In these drawings illustrating my invention, A is a motor-case made preferably in two sections secured together by means of screws a, passing through ears a on the periphery of the case A. This case A is provided with a base A which is provided with a discharge opening A2, the side walls A3 of which are vertical and in as close proximity to the sides of the buckets B, as may be, to permit the free rotation of the wheel C carrying said buckets without contact therewith. This wheel C, being mounted in the case A in the usual manner. In a projection D on the edge of the case A, near the base thereof, I make an internally screw-threaded opening D in which opening a water inlet pipe E is screwed. This inlet pipe E is provided with a j et-nozzle E which is removably screwed into the end of the inlet pipe E so that it can be removed and -a jet-nozzle E having a smaller or larger opening c may be substituted to adapt the motor for use under different water pressures, as may be desired. The buckets B of this motor, are made preferably integral with the Wheel C, The impact faces b of the buckets B are nearly radial to the y wheel C, with the peripheral edges t thereof slightly curved backward,v as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
From the rear of each bucket B, a U- shaped extension B extends backward toward the following bucket B, approximately one half the distance between the buckets B, and the bottom of this U-shaped extension is substantially on a line from/the base of one bucket B to the periphery t of the following bucket, so that the water received from the jet-nozzle E into the bucket B is thrown outward by the extension B thereon, through the dischar e opening A2 of the motor-case without being carried up into the shell A.
In Figs. 4, 5 and 6, I show a modified constructionof the buckets of my motor. In this construction the bucket B2 4and the extension B3 thereon are of the same shape and contour as the bucket B and the extension B thereon hereinbefore described, but in the base of the extension B3, I place a wedgeshaped deiiector F the point f of which is some little distance from the inside face of the bucket B2, as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6. The object of this deflectorF is to deect the water sidewise as it leaves the buckets and aids in discharging the water therefrom.
In operation as the wheel C is rotated by the impact of water from the jet-nozzle E against the buckets B thereon, from the shape and contour of the bucket structure it is substantially all discharged therefrom as soon as it has performed its work, instead of more or less of it being carried up into the case A around the wheel C and thereby impeding more or less the efficiency of the motor.
Having thus shown and described my invention, so as to enable others to construct and use the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent of the United States is:
1. The combination in an impact watermotor, of a case having a discharge opening in the base thereof, a nozzle mechanism mounted in said shell at one side of and near the discharge o ening therein, a wheel mounted in said s ell, radial impact buckets on the periphery of said wheel and U-shaped rojections extending rearwardly from the buckets, the bottoms of said projections being substantially on lines extending from the bases of the buckets to the tops of the succeeding buckets, whereby the water is thrown outward through the discharge opening in the case, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination in an impact watermotor, of a case having` a discharge opening in the base thereof, an interchangeable nozzle mechanism mounted in said shell at one side of and near the discharge opening therein, a Wheel mounted in said shell. curved impact buckets extending radially from the periphery of said wheel, and U- shaped projections extending rearwardly from the buckets, the bottoms of said projections being on lines from the bases of the buckets to the tops of the succeedingl buckets, and Wedge shaped deflectors in the bottoms of said U-shaped projections, substantially as set forth.
3, The combination in an impact Watermotor bucket, of an impact tace slightly curved transversely but substantially radial to the periphery of the wheel upon which it is mounted, a U-shaped projection extending rearwardly from the bucket, the bottom of which extends from the base ol'Y the bucket substantially in a tangential direction to the )eriphery of the wheel upon which the bucket is mounted, and a wedge-shalmd detlector in the base of said extension having' its point in the direction ol' the lace oi the bucket, substantially as set forth.
