Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July '7, 1908.
Application filed June 18, 1907. Serial No. 379,611.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, RICHARD O. MCKILI- GET, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overhead Trolley-Tire Crossings; and I do hereby deto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
T e object of my invention is to roduce a simple and cheap overhead trol ey wire crossing, which shall be easily adjustable to any angle between the wires desired, and which shall be readily adapted to either a continuous line wire, or tol a disconnected line wire.
To these ends, my invention consists in a plurality of metallic arms connected to an insulating center iece. Each of said arms is provided with c amping means for the line wires, and also with tram ways having a raised center portion forming a continuation of the track for the trolley wheel, all as will be more fully hereinafter disclosed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification; Figure 1 represents a plan view of my improved trolley crossing. Fig. 2 a sectional view through the center of the same. Fig. 3 a plan view of the same looking from the bottom upwrd.

A indicates a center piece, which may be of insulating or other suitable material. Said piece is provided with a plurality of holes B through which pass bolts or other fastening means C, which bolts hold in place the metallic conducting arms D provided with the inclined slots E and fitted with wedges F adapted to clamp the wires Hl to the said arms D.v The Wedges F are provided with a plurality of wings G, on each side of their center line, tting in corresponding notches in the arms D, as shown, and are hinged between lugs H carried by said arms by means of a cotter pin I. Said arms D are provided with flanges J on their undersides, which are spaced apart a distance somewhat greater than the thickness of the trolley wheel, and are also provided with the swell or reinforcement K, which forms a continuation of the track on which the trolley runs after it leaves the wire H. The center piece A lits in cutaway portions in the ends of said arms D, as shown, and is rovided with a spacing piece L, also of insu ating or other suitable material, and a bolt M passes through the two pieces A and L to secure the whole together.
The operation of my device is as follows:h If a disconnected line is desired, the wires H are passed through the slots in the arms, as shown, which slots are of a width equal to the thickness of said wires, the wedges F are then forced down upon said wires, so that their wings G enter their corresponding notches in the arms D, and the pins I ass through the ends of the same and the ugs H. The ends of the wires are next bent up over the pivoted ends of said wedges, as shown, and the same are then securely fastened in place. In case a continuous line is desired, either the same wire H may be continued on over the center piece A and passed through the slot in the opposite arm D, or a separate wire may be passed over said lpiece A and connect the ends of the wire I, as desired, in which case said separate wire would be joined in any suitable manner, as by twisting, to the respective ends of the wires H.
My trolley crossing being securel fastened in p ace, before the trolley wheel eaves one of the wires H, it is caught between the lower projecting flanges J of the arms D and is guided in the tram way formed by said arms. Upon leaving the wire H, the trolley wheel immediately takes up, or contacts with, the swell K lying between said arms J and forming a continuous track with the wires H. It is thus continuously guided until it is safely within the flanges J of the 'first arm D, and is sure to ass on until it strikes the corresponding swel K on the next arm, which in turn guides the said wheel onto the wire H attached to said arm. It will also be seen that my device affords a ready means of providing any angle desired between two crossing wires, for all that is necessary is merely to unfasten one of the bolts C, turn its arm D, around the center piece A, until it makes the desired angle with the other wire, and then secure it in place by passing said bolt C, through the said arm D, and the appropriate hole B, in the piece A. By this simple means I am enabled to change any arm D, or adjust the same to any desired angle with any other arm. By thus moving or adjusting these arms D, so as to make various angles with each other,` of course, I also cause the various conductors to malre various angles with each other. It will also be seen that I entirely do away with all solder, or otherfperinanent and non-detachable fastenings. My device as a whole is simple to manufacture, there being no parts difficult to make by machinery, or by casting, and is therefore exceedingly cheapb as well as efficient.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In an electric railway, the combination of a plurality of pairs of independent conductors; an insulated center piece, provided with a series of holes B; and a plurality of arms cut away at their inner ends and detachably connected to said center piece, each of said arms being provided with a slot and means in the same for securing one of said conductors to one of said arms, and each arm also being provided with a pair of integral depending flanges forming a tram way for the trolley wheel, whereby any wire may be readily secured at any desired angle with any other'wire and as soon as the trolley wheel leaves any wire it is immediately caught and guided in the said tram way, substantially as described.
2. In an electric railway, the combinationl of a plurality of pairs of independent conductors; an insulated center piece, provided with a series of holes B; and a plurality of pairs of independent arms each arm being detachably connected to said center piece, and each of said arms being provided with a slot and means in the same for securing one of said conductors to one of said arms, each arm also being provided with a pair of depending iianges forming a tram way on its under side for the trolley wheel, and an integral swell between said anges for guiding said wheel, whereby any wire may be readily secured at any desired angle with any other wire and as soon as the trolley wheel leaves any wire it is immediately caught and guided in the said tram way, substantially as described.-
3. In an electric railway, the combination of'a plurality of conductors H, provided with turned up` ends; an insulated center piece A, provided with a series of holes B; and a plurality of independent arms D, cut away to fit said center piece and provided with holes adapted to register with said holes B, bolts C, securing said arms to said center piece, said arms, also, provided with a slot E,
for receiving one of said conductors, and a pivoted wedge F, around which said turned up ends of said conductors fit, for securing said conductors in said slot, and each of said arms being also provided with depending ianges J and a reinforce or swell K, constituting a tram way for the trolley wheel, whereby any wire may be readily secured at any desired angle with any other wire and as soon as the trolley wheel leaves any wire it is .immediately caught and guided in the said tram way, substantially as described.
4. In an electric railway the combination of a plurality of conductors H, an insulated center piece A, provided with a series of holes B, and a plurality of arms D, provided with holes adapted to register with said holes B, bolts C securing said arms to said center piece, said arms, also, provided with a slot E for receiving one of said conductors, and a wedge F provided with a plurality of wings -Gr on each side of its center line and fitting corresponding recesses in said arms for securing said conductors in said slot, and each of said arms being also provided with depending iianges J, and a reinforce or swell K constituting a tramway for the trolley wheel, whereby any wire may be readily secured at any desired anglewith any other wire and as soon as the trolley wheel leaves any wire it is immediately caught and guided in the said tramway, substantially as dep scribed.
