H. W. MAROY.
' TROLLEY SWITGH FOR ELECTRIC RAILWAYS. No. 438,894.
Patented Oct. 21, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY W. MARCY, OF UTICA, NEW YORK.
TROLLEY-SWITCH FOR ELECTRIC 'RAILWAYS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,894, dated October 21, 1890.
Application filed July 1'7, 1890. Serial No. 359,077. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. MAROY, of Utica, in the county of Oneida, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trolley-S witches for Electric Railways, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide simple, inexpensive, and efflcient means for guiding the trolley through the switch of an overhead-line working-conductor; and to that end the invention consists in the improved construction of the switch, as hereinafter described, and specifically set forth in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, Figurel is an inverted plan view of my improved switch. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same with the trolley in position for traversing the switch, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the switch in an inverted position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My improved switch consists, essentially, of the plate A, which is preferably composed of copper, and secured to the usual support in ahorizontal position. This plate is gradually widened so as to make one end twice the width of the opposite end, and from the side edges of said plate project downward flanges c c and c 0', extending from end to end of the plate, and consequently diverging from each other, so that the distance between the ends of the flanges c c is twice the distance between the opposite ends of the flanges c c, and thus said plate is formed with a double track at one end converging into a single track at the opposite end.
To the under side of the plate A, in the center of the double-tracked end or widest portion between the flanges c c, is secured one end of a spring-tongue t, which extends lengthwise of the plate, and lies with its free end normally against the inner side of one of the flanges c at its junction with one of the parallel flanges 0. Central between the fixed end of the tongue t and the flanges c c are two line-wires d d, secured to the under side of the plate. This spring-tongue forms acontinuous open track from the main line to the switch and safely guides the trolley onto the switch, and in the travel of the trolley from the switch to the main line said spring-tongue yields to the side pressure of the trolley and allows the same to enter between the parallel flanges c c, which guide it onto the wire d, fastened to the plate A central between the flanges. Afterthe trolley has passed the spring-tongue, the latter automatically resumes its original position.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The improved trolley-switch, consisting of the horizontal plate A, gradually widened at one end to double the width of the opposite end and provided with the longitudinal flanges c c and c c, projecting downward from the edges of said plate, the wire cl, secured to the narrow end of the plate central between the flanges c c, the spring-tongue t, secured at one end to the under side of the wide end of the plate and central between the flanges o c and lying with its free end normally against the inner side of one of the latter flanges at its junction with one of the flanges c, and two wires d cl, secured to the under side of the wide end of the plate and respectively central between the spring-tongue and flanges, substantially as described and shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 14th day of July, 1890.
HENRY WV. MAROY. [L. s.]
