To all floh-om it may concern:
Be' it known that we, llliLLiA-n ALEXANDER Rosnnnnr and PAUL S. JUNKiN, citizens ot the United States, residing at Creston, in the county ot' Union and State ol Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Liners for Molds for liinotype-Machines; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a novel construction in a liner for linotype machines and has for its object to provide simple and ellicient means whereby a hollow or recessed type-bar or slug may be cast inthe mold of the character employed tor casting solid rectangular type-bars or slugs, and consists in the features ot` construction and combinations ot parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
ln the accompanying' drawings illustrating our invention: Figure 1 is a. plan viewoi" a mold lfor linotype machines' provided with means constructed in accordance with our invention tor casting a hollow or recessed typebar therein, the latter and the liners being shown in section on the line '1-1 of Fig'. 2. Iliff. 2 is a view in side elevation of the liners removed from the mold and showing` the type-bar or slug; therein in dotted lines. Fig; 3 is a view oi' the opposite side ot the liners from that shown in Fig. 2, the typebar or slug beingl removed. Fig. et is a perspective view of the type-bar or slug.
i It is desirable in casting slugs to reduce the weight thereof not only to reduce transportation charges but likewise to enable a larger number of vslugs to be produced from a given quantity lof metal, thus reducingr the investment in the latter.
The molds usually'provided are adapted only to cast solid rectangular typc-bars or slugs ol' any desired length or width of column, while for the casting ol' hollow slugs special and very expensive molds are nec-cssary.
The primary object ot' our inyention is to provide means whereby the mold ordinarily employed for casting solid slugs may be converted into a mold [or casting hollow slugs,
A by using our liners whereby a single mold Will. answer all purposes ot the linotype maker or operator.
To this end the invention consists in providing each of the liners A and B, disposed between the members C and D of the mold and which determine the length and width of the mold cavity, with a projection E at its inner cnd which is of substantially one-half the thickness oi the liner and one 'lace of which is llush with one lace of said linerso that said projection will lie snugly against one wall ol the mold cavity. Said projecf tion E oit each liner is of less height than said liner and the lower lace thereo'lx'is flush with the lower face oll the liner. The free end of said pro'cction is also slightly inclined. so that said projection is oi greater length on its lower than on its upper tace or edge.. Each ot said projections is further provided adjacent. its juncture with the body ol. the liner with a recess F one wall of which is' lush with the inner end wall of said liner, and which extends from the upper edge or l'ace ol said projection to a depth of about two thirds three-quarters the height thercol, said recesses being" slightly Haring toward their mouths. rlhe. combined length ol said projections E is less than the length oi the mold cavity so that between the opposingT free ends of said projections a substantially V-shaped recess G is -formed. Said liners A and B are cach provided on one 'l'ace with a. rib H which is adapted to enter a groove I in the tace oi the member (i ol the mold and said liners thus held against lateral movement with rclation to the said mold members.
As in the case ol" ordinary molds a number of sets of liners must be had in order to produce mold cavities ot various sizes to accord with the difierent widths of column and size or point of type to be castI and also to properly position such cavity between the ends ol the'mold. Hence, in order to cast hollow slugs it will be necessary for the operator to provide himself with liners constructed in accordance with our invention, in addition to the liners he employs loicasting solid slugs.
ln casting' the slug' the metal tlows .into-thc recesses F and (l as well as lilling the remainder of the mold cavity, thus forming; the slug J provided in one ol' its side 4faces below the type-face with recesses l bordered at their ends by the ribs li and M.' A sitiicicnt thickness ol' metal is provided over said recesses l to withstand the pressure to which the type is subjected.
lhc ribs ll ot the liners A and ll serve to hold said liners against lateral movement relativcl y to the mold members, and to hold the lsame against vertical movement with relagages only the lower face of the slug east end4 which will readily pass through the reduced mold cavity. Illustration and description of such ejector blade or ejecting Ineens is omitted es being superfluous and forming no part of ourpresent invention.
. We elann as our invention:
l. ln n mold for linotype machines, the
liners provided et their inner ends with projections partially filling the niold cavity at one side thereof, said projections having flarrecesses therein, the inout-hs of said recesses beingl in the upper edges of said projections. Y
ln s mold for linotype machines, the liners provided at their inner ends with prejectiens partially -lllling the 'mold cavity at one side thereof, the iree ends of said projections being inclined to provide a snlosta-n" tielly `ii-sliepcd recess between the saine.
eeaess 3. ln a mold ier linotype machines, the liners provided at their inner ends With projections partially filling the mold cavity at one side thereof, the free ends of said projections being inclined to provide' a'substentially l-shaped recess between the same, there being recesses in said projections eX- tending downwardly from tne upper edges thereof,
4. ln a mold for linotype machines, the liners constituting the end Wells of the mold cavity, al projection carried by each of said liners and partially filling the mold cavity at one side thereethe upper edges el said projeetions being disposed below the upper end of said mold cavity and provided with re-` cesses in their upper edges.
In testimony whereof We have signed our naine in presence of two subscribing witnesses. y
