KNIFE -SHARPENER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LOUIS JAUoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to knife Sharpeners of that class adapted to be attached to a convenient support and the blade of a knife drawn -across the same in contact with the sharpening member.v

The object of the invention is to provide a Sharpener of this character which will be simple of construction and cheap in manufacture; in which the sharpening member can be adjusted relatively to the support so as to bring a new part thereof into o erative position when one part shall have ecome worn;

" which shall be so constructed and mounted as to form a rigid support for the sharpening member; and which will not vibrate when in use, thus enabling the blade which is being drawn across the same-to be maintained in constant enga `ement with the sharpening member, thereliy producing a smooth, even edge on the blade.

-With these objects in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in certain parts and combinations hereinafter to be described, and then more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective vlew of my invention; Fig. 2 is a ongitudinal sectional view, taken centrally through Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, taken on the line x of Fig. l and looking in the direction of the arrows.

In these drawings I have illustrated the preferred form of my invention and have shown the same as consisting of a support having a base portion and an upwardly extending frame or housing, in which is rigidly mounted a sharpening member and which is provided with suitable guides for guiding the edge of the blade in contact with the sharpening member. gle to the base portion l and may, if desired, have a foot 3 extending 'substantially in alinement with the base 1 and serving to strengthen the housing 2 and hold the same against vibration. The sharpening member preferably consists of a disk 9 of sharpening material, the material preferred being a very hard grade of steel. This disk is mounted within the housing 2 in any suitable manner, but preferably by means of a bolt 4 extending through the wall of the housing and through the disk and provided with a nut 5 which enables the side walls of the housing to be clam ed against the disk to secure the same rigid y in position, but which will per mit of the disk being adjusted within the housing by the mere loosening of the nut 5. The housing 2 has suitable openings adapted to expose the disk to view,v and, as here shown, the walls of these openings form the guides which support the blade in contact with the disk. The openings, which are shown at 6, preferably have their outer walls substantially vertical and their inner walls extending at an acute angle thereto. The outer walls of the opening 6 preferably extend substantially parallel with the axis of the disk. The blade is t en dbrawn through the opening in the direction of inclination of the housing 2, the contact of the edge of the blade with the periphery of the disk 9 serving to sharpen the same and forming a slightly concave edge thereon. By repeating this o eration on opposite sides ofthe disk the blade is sharpened on both sides thereof and a keen smooth edge is formed thereon. The inclination of the housing 2 and the support 3 therefor serves to rener the same practicall rigid and prevent all vibration thereof, suc as would tend to cause the blade to vibrate upon the disk and prevent the same from being held in con- I have here shown the i stant contact therewith. When that portion of the periphery of the disk which is exosed becomes worn or smooth7 the disk may be rotated to bring a new portion of the same into operative position by simply loosening the nut 5 on the bolt 4, and, when the entire peri hery of the disk shall have become Worn, or led with worn places, the disk may be removed and replaced in the housing in al reverse position, and, in this way, additional sharpening surface secured. The support, which comprises the base and its housing, is of such a construction that it may be manufactured at a small cost, and the housing not only furnishes a support for the disk, but also furnishes a protecting casing therefor which prevents injury to the same. The sharpening disks are made of a very hard brittle steel which is easily broken and it would be necessary to provide the same with some protecting cover, which is here supplied by the housing 2.

While the device is designed particularly for attachment to a fixed support and to have the blade drawn across the same, it will be apparent that when it is desired to sharpen a fixed blade, such as a mower knife, the base or support l may be used as a handle, and, by grasping the base in the hand, the device may be moved along the edge of the fixed blade to sharpen the same.

I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A knife Sharpener comprising a base, upwardly extending parallel Walls forming a housing and each having a notch in the upper edge thereof, and a disk mounted between said walls.

In a knife Sharpener, a support comprising a base having an upwardly extending inverted U-shaped portion forming a housing and having a notch formed in the u per edge thereof, and a disk mounted in saicfliousing, having its diameter parallel with the walls thereof and its periphery adjacent to said notch.

3. In a knife Sharpener, a support comprising a base, an upwardly extending housing inclined away from said base and having a notch in one wall thereof, and a disk mounted in said housing and having its periphery intersecting said notch.

4. In a knife Sharpener, a support comrising a base portion having an upwardly bent inverted U-shaped portion intermediate its ends, adapted to form a housing and provided with a notch in the upper wall thereof, and a disk mounted in said housing.
