METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING STRAINERS FOR WELLS. l
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED I. GETTY, a eitien oli the United States of America, residing at Jennings, in the parish of Calcasieu and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful- Inrprovements in Methods for Manufacturing Strainer-s for Wells, o'f which the following is a specilication.
My invention'relates to a certain new and improved method for manufacturing strainers for wells, and its object is to provideI a method for such manufacture which shall have certain advantages which will appear more fully and at large in the course et this specification.
The apparatus which I prcl'er to use in practicing my improved method is that illustrated, described in detail and claimed in my application on machines l'or immulacturing screening l'or well tubes, tiled on even date herewith and, allotted Serial Number 253,18), and this preferred form of apparatus is ili'nsi' trated in the ata-.ompanying dii-wings, in
' upon the pipe to,center thcl l'rame.
which .Figure l is an elevation ol the apparatus; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the wire-forming rollsyFig. ii is a section in the line Ii olh Fig. 2, Fif 4 is a section in the line il -4 of Fig. l.; Fi l. 5 is a top plan ol the apparatus, and Fig. t3 is a perspectiJe vView ol` a short length ol' the wire alter being passed through the wire-loruiing rolls` lt will be obvious that as iai' as the method oi'` operation is concerned, any one ol' a large. number ol` devices ce.. he used and by illustrating in. detail the preferred torni ol' apparatus, lv do not intr ml to limit mysell to the use thereof.
ln l'orming tiltcrs or straim-,rs according to `my improved method, a pipe, A, having 'perl'oiations, o, is lirst provided. 'lhis pipe is centered in. a lathe, l), or other devicE by whichit can he rotated, :ind upon it is mounted a l'rame, (f, carrying rolls, c, c,aml shoes, ci, ci. 'lhese shoes and rolls are :uljustable to lit pipe oi' anyy diamettn and they bcar An arm, (1, extends backward. l'rom the trame and bears upon a stzitii'nary portion oll the lathe to pr e\'cn.t the rotation olI the trame with the 'l'he ire which l prefer to use in constructing filters is T-slniped in cross section, and is l'ed iu almost its compil-ted term to the apparatus, the device. operating only on tlv two edges el' the head ot the T. 'lhis une, indi- Specication of Letters Patent.
` Application filed March 31, 1905. Serial No. 253.190.

cated by, l), in the drawings, is in the lrst instance passed between. two l'orming rolls, lt), F, which have grooves, ,f, to receive the head ol" the T. The groove, f, has notches or depressions, j", into which the material ol' the T-liead is crowded, so :is to l'orni later ally-projecting lugs, d. '.lhe depth ol' the deprcssiomj", determines the .size or height ol' the lugs, andv as will subsequently appear, the mesh ol3 the screen and the l'orming rolls are therefore made readily 'ren'iovablc l'rom place as simwn and described in my application above referred te, so that the apparatus can be readily adapted to the manufacture el' screening of 'various meshes.
After the wire leaves the l'orming rolls l'rom. which it emerges with one smooth edge and one tugged edge, it is wound upon the ii'ie, it, as illustrated, the lugs on one turn lying against the llat or smooth edge on the next turn, thereby spacing the turns apart and forming meshes between the turns of wire through which lioruid can pass. lt will. be obvious that the size oli the mesh is determined by the height. olthe lugs, d, l'ormed on the wire.
rl'he wire is drawn through the iorming rolls solelyY by means ol the pipe. and the entire l'raine. and forming mechanism is shil'ted along the pipe hy engmndnent ol" th'e shoe, el, with the hist turn oil 'the nire.
'The method herein set` i`ori`h is particularly advantageous for the reason that a uniform height, so that :i pcrl'ect screen can be obtained. Fiu'therznore, wil h the method herein pointed out, relis haring depressions ol various site. can be used, und inlerclmnged with comparative ease, so that screens ol various mesh can be produced with the .same apparatus. lerciolire, the. mien siveljiy used .aerei-n has been a screen ce vposed olL oriimtry wire geen, und, :is :i
sult, the users oll :such screening have. come to identityy the lim-ness ol' .scre n which the), desire, h i' the numher ol' the mesh ol wirigauze hating correslminlingly lim` openings.
ln order to sell filters ol the type herein l shown on :i practical commercial scale, it is necessary, or at least extremelyv desirable, to be ableI to'l'urnish them with meshes which correspond accurately to the standard wire gauze meshes, and by the use ol curious interchangeable rollers, this can he done with the greatest. ease with my device.
l. realize that. coursiderubie rurialion is wire is ,'nod-uced having lugs olA absolutel)r lil() strainen' which consists in forcing a Wire alo possible in the details of the procedure herein described, and I do not intend to limit 1nyself thereto except as set forth in the ciairns.
I claim as new and desire'to secure by Letters Patent l. The method of making a Wire Wrapped through a lug-forming device, adapted to form ings thereon by c'ornpression,"fthen winding that portion ofthe W1re u on which the lugs have been formed aroun a central core and keeping a .tension upon thel Wire during the entire lug forming and Winding operation.
2. The method of making a wire Wrapped strainer, which consists in drawing a Wire throuvh a lug-forming device having a roll provi( ed with a depressioninto which the metal is forced to form the lugs by compression, then winding that portion of the wire on which the lugs have been formed around a central core and keeping the wire lduring the entire operation under tension,
3. The method of making a Wire wrapped strainer, which consists in drawing a Wire throu h a 1n forming device having a roh provi ed Wit a depression into which the metal is forced to form the lugs by compression, then winding that portion vof the wire on which. the lugs-have been formed around -a central core, the uli of the wire which is necessary to draw 1t through the 1ug-forming devlce behig imparted to the wire hv Winding that portion of the Wire n on which the 1u s have been formed arouni the core.
l. he method of making e Wire wrapped strainer. which consists in drawing a wire feeaeo through n lugorining device embodying a pair ot reha' one ot which is provided With depressions lnto which the meta]A of the wire is compressed. to form ings, then Windhig ortion of the wire on which the luge l of the wire upon 'which the lugs have been formed around the core.
5. The method of making a Wire Wrapped strainer, which consists in drawing a wire through a lug-forming device and which re duces the width of the Wire, then winding that portion of the Wire Awhich has been reduced in Width and on which the lugs have been formed around a central core with the transverse elements of the reduced Width portion extending parallel to the axis of the core,`the null of the Wire which `ie necessary to draw it through the lug-forming device being imparted `to the wire by Winding 'that portion o1 the wire 'so reduced and upon which the ings have been formed around. the core and Vkeeping e tension upon the wire during the entire iugi`oir1iing and Winding operation.
in witness whereof I have signed the above application for Letters Patent at den Dinge, in thc parie-h. of Caicaeieu' and State of liiouisiane, this 21st day of Maekrt. D. i905.
