UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES PEIERS, OF TRENTON, NEW JERSEY, AND WILLIAM FEITER, OF BUCKS COUNTY,
' PENNSYLVANIA.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,925, dated May 4, 1852.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Cannes Parents, of the city of Trenton, in the State of New J ersey, and WILLIAM Frame, of the county of Bucks, in the State of Perms lvania, have invented a new and Improved ode of Preventing Anvils with Steel Faces from Cracking in the Process of Tempering.
The nature of our invention consists in providing a cavity in any part of the body of the anvil; which cavity may vary in size or in shape, and have its aperture in the bottom, sides, or any partof the anvil convenient for cooling the interior thereof while the face is undergoin the process of hardening:--the purpose 0 said cavity bein to admit a current of water, oil or other inrdening fluid or mixture while the face is subjected to the hardening process so as the more expeditiously to lower the temperature of the interior of the anvil and prevent checks and flaws which fre uently occur in solid anvils when the hardening is done altogether from the outside.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
o construct our anvils, with steel faces, in any of the known modes, making a cavity in the body of the anvil of any size or form convenient for letting in water or other fluid into the same. As a matter of convenience we usually make the aperture of said cavity in the bottom of the anvil as is represented in the accompanying drawing. We then subject the face of the anvil to the process of tempering in any of the usual modes, and at the same time we cause water or. any other cooling fluid to flow into the cavity above described, so that, by this means, the whole of the anvil cools together and is not subject to those flaws and cracks which occur so frequently in the common mode of manufacture where the face and-body of the anvil are in such different states of temperature.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patentis A cavity in the body of anvils for the purpose of cooling the same, by the introduction of water or other fluid into the said cavity, while the faces of the said anvils are undergoing the process of tempering.
