IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR HEATING CRANKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,944, dated April 15, 1873; application filed February 17, 1873,
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES MILLER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Apparatus for Warming Cranks, of which the following is a specication: l rlhis invention has for its object to facilitate the warming of cranks used on steam and other engines, for the purpose of itting them Vupon their shafts, and at the same time to prevent the warming of the connected ends of such cranks and of their wrist-pins.
It is well known to machinists and engineers that, espeoiallysince the cranks of large engines have been shortened, the heating of their larger ends without heating their Wristpin ends is a matter of eXtreme difficulty, although of great importance.
My invention consists principally in the arrangement ot' a heating-case having a partition which divides it into two chambers, the partition being slotted to admit the crankblades through it, so that one end of the crank will be in one chamber, to which heat is applied, or, rather, in which a tire is built, while the other ends will be in the other chamber, and immersed in the water which fills the same, and will thereby be kept cool. My invention also consists in the use, in connection with the aforesaid apparatus, of a tubular or metal frame for raising the heated ends of the cranks out of the tire; and also, in combination therewith, of a chain applied to the crank wrist-pin for entirely removing the crank from the apparatus.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a vertical longitudinal section on the line G G, Fig. 3, of my improved apparatus for warming cranks. Fig. 2 is a vertical tra-nsverse section ofthe same on the line K K, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a top View thereof.

The letter A represents a box or case, built of metal or other tire-proof material, and provided with a partition, a, which extends through it transversely, and by which the case A is divided into two chambers, b and d. The bottom of thechamber b contains a grate, e,- upon which a re for-heating the crank may be built. The bottom of the chamber d is solid, to retain the coolingliquid which is used in said chamber for the reception of the crank-blades B. The partition ais slotted, so that such crank-blades may be placed through the partition to enter. with their large ends the. chamber b, and with their smaller ends and wrist-pinf-the chamber d, as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. After the crank has been put in position, the recesses in the partition a are closed over the crank-blades, andat their sides, by suitable cement or other means, and then a fire is built on the grate e, and water or other cooling-liquid poured into the chamber d. The larger ends of the crank will thereby be heated and properly prepared for receiving the shaft, while the other end of the crank will remain cool in the desired or ordinary condition. G is a frame, of rectangular orother suitable shape, and constructed of tubular or hollow sides and bottom, as shown in Fig. 2. `It is placed within the chamber b in an upright position, so that the crank-blades pass through it, as shown, and serves to raise the crank-blades out of the said chamber y when the same have been sufficiently heated. Being of hollow metal, the frame() can receive Water or other cooling-liquid, and will therebyv be protected against injury by fire. D is a chain applied to the wrist-pin of the crank, for the purpose of raising the same out of the chamber d. When the crank is to be entirely removed, it is elevated simultaneously at both ends by means of the frame O and chain D.
Claims.
l. The apparatus for warming cranks, when composed of a box, A, which contains the heatin g-apartment band the cooling-compartment d, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The metal frame C, applied, in connection with the Vapparatus for warming cranks, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The chain D, arranged in combination with the crank to be heated and with a frame, C, and box A, substantiallyT as set forth.
