To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SUMMERS BROWN, a sub'ect of the King of Great Britain, residing at ew York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lm rovements in Paper- Feeding Devices for rinting-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains' to make and use the same.
This invention relates to paper-feeding mechanism for cylinder printing machines and consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a machine embodying my invention; Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the same; and Fig. 3 represents a detailtview (enlarged) of one of the cylinder-gudgeons, showing in section the sprocket wheel mounted thereon.

-G designates the table over which the sheets of paper are fed under the cylinder and between it and the platen roller 1. This table is hinged at one end at h, and is drawn upward by a spring J after each depression by the paper-feed-roll K. The action of this spring also. compensates for the diminution of the pile of paper as each sheet is withdrawn. To control the upwardmovement of said table, I employ a sto L, which is a nut threaded on a screw-rod and arranged above a plate N, projecting from said table, said plate being perforated to let it slide up and down on said rod. The latter is operated step by step by a pawl carried by said table and engaging a ratchet wheel 0 mounted on a short, horizontal, relativel fixed shaft 0 and carrying a bevel wheel which meshes with a similar wheel P on the lower end of the said screw-rod, to turn the same. The said pawl and ratchet are constructed and arranged to feed the said nut or stop upward at each stroke a distance correspond ng approximately to the thickness of a s eat of paper; so that each depression of said table provides for adjusting the surface to be printed on to the position which it should occupy with respect to the printing cylinder for the next impress. The said paper-feed roller is mountedfon a bifurcated arm K of a shaft K rovided with a sprocket wheel or e uiva ent gear Q connected by an endless riving chain or'belt Q to another sprocket wheel Q of diameter equal to Q and fastened to one of the gridgeons B of the cylinder B by a screw also by a stud g of the gudgeon, fitting'into a socket g o the latter sprocket wheel. By removing said screw, the wheel Q is left free to be removed from the said gudgeon, the said stud being readily pulled out of the socket.

The roller will always strike the paper opposite the same oint on the table G, but it will travel throug a greater or less are of a circle in doing 'so according to the adjustinent of frame K circumferentially forward or backward by the means aforesaid; and the type cylinder will turn correspondingly more or less during the increased or dim1nished period of time required by the roller K in reachin the paper, since the disk R and c linder are rotated by the same power at t e same speed and simultaneously. Of course the paper does not move forward until the feeding roll K reaches it. I Hence the above adjustment enables me to determine and vary the oint on the aper at which the printin siall begin wit rout adjusting the type cy inder or moving the platen roller in any way, and as the screw R may be shifted to any graduation on the disk, this adjustment may be so exact as to insure the beginning of printing precisely at the desired line of the paper and by the chosen line of type on the type c linder.
The printin ri bon S normally winds from s ring rol or T to spring roller U, auto matica ly returning to the latter. The platen roller 1 is journaled in sup orts I and held in position by a s ring bearing at V against the end of a ever I which is pivoted at its middle on one of the platen rollerjournals, the said roller being mounted on supporting links I and the said spring being adjusted by a screw V. The said ribbonoperating devices and platen-supporting devices are more fully described and claimed 5 in my said application #325343. The cylinderB is driven by gear wheels W and W, the latter being mounted on a shaft W and locked at will by a stud W as described and claimed in said application.
X designates a guide frame bearing on the pile of paper sheets, as shown in my patent #825186, and movable with said sheets up and down on studs X of said feed table. The latter bears also guide plate X for the sides of the paper. Said table rests on a box Y which supports some minor parts of the machine and may hold tools. The hereindescribed nut L may be locked by a chain and pin L.
The operation of this invention has been hereinbefore sufficiently explained.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1. In combination with a printing cylinder and a depressible paper-feeding table, paperfeeding mechanism, comprising an arm carrying a device arranged for contact with the paper and simultaneous depression of the said table, means for automatically raising the table after such depression sufficiently to compensate for the thickness of the sheet of paper thus removed and means for varying the movement of said arm and thereby regulatin the interval before the said device 1actshon t e paper to feed the same as set ort 2. In combination with a printing cylinder and a depressible paper-feeding table, a paper-feeding roller, an arm on which said roller is mounted, means for causing said roller to descend on the paper and table, moving forward the former and depressing the latter, a spring for raising the said table 4 automatically, means for regulating the action of the said sprin in order that it may compensate for the thickness of each layer of paper removed, and means for adjusting the travel of said arm and roller thereby regulating the interval before the said roller feeds the paper substantially as set. forth.
3. In combination with a printin couple, a de ressible pa er-supporting tab e means for e evating sai table operated by such de pression, a rotary shaft, an arm carried by said shaft and adjustable circumferentially thereon to vary the interval before the feeding action and an inflexible device carried by said arm and arranged to feed a sheet of paper and simultaneously depress said table substantially as set forth.
4. In combination with a printin couple, a depressible paper-supporting tab e, paper feeding mechanism comprising an arm carrying a devicearranged for contact with the paper and simultaneous depression of the said table, positively acting means for automatically raising the table after such depression sufficiently to compensate for the thickness of the sheet of paper thus removed and means for varying the movement of said arm and thereby regulating the interval before the said device acts on the paper to feed the same as set forth. r 5. In combination with a rotary printing cylinder, a depressible paper supporting table, means positively operated by the machine f-or elevating said table, a rotary shaft, an arm carried by said shaft and adjustable circumferentially thereupon to vary the interval beforethe feeding action and a roller carried by said arm and arranged to feed a sheet of paper and simultaneously depress said table substantially as set forth.
6. In combination with a printing couple, a depressible paper supporting table, a rotary shaft, an arm carried by said shaft and adj ustable circumferentially thereon to vary the interval before the feeding action, positively acting mechanism for elevating the said table and an inflexible device carried by said arm and arranged to feed a sheet of paper and simultaneously depress said table substantially as set forth. a
7. In combination with a printing couple, a depressible paper sup orting table, a rotary shaft, an arm carried iv said shaft and ad justable circumferentia 1y thereon to vary the interval before the feeding action, means operated by the depression of said table for automatically elevating the said table and an inflexible device carried by said arm and arranged to feed a sheet of paper and simultaneously depress said table substantially as set forth. 4

In combination with a printing couple, a depressible paper-supporting table, a rotary shaft, an arm carried said shaft and adjustable circumferentia ly thereon to vary the interval before the feeding action, positively operating means for automatically elevating the said table and an inflexible dey vice carried by said arm and arranged to feed a sheet of paper and simultaneously depresssaid table substantially as set forth.
9. In combination with a printing couple, a depressible paper-supporting table, means, operated by the depression of the table, for e evating the latter, a shaft turning on its axis, and a device moving with said shaft to feed a sheet of paper, said device being adjustable on said shaft to vary the intervalbefore the feeding action substantially as set forth.
12. In combination with a printing cylinder a shaft geared to and rotating with said cylinder, an arm carried by said shaft, a paper-feeding roller carried by said arm and means for adjusting the said arm -circumfer entiall-yon said shaft to vary the interval before the said feeding roller acts on the'paper, the said printing cylinder being unaffected in position by the above adjustment of the feeding roller substantially as set forth.
13. In combination with a printing cylinder, a paper-feeding device, an arm carrying the same, a shaft on which said arm is mounted, a graduated disk fast on the said shaft and means for clamping the said arm to said disk in any one of several different circumferential positions of said arm to regulate the interval before said device acts on the aper and mechanism for driving the said cy inder and shaft simultaneously, the said printing cylinder being unaffected in position by the above adjustment of the feeding roller substantially as set forth.
14. In'combination with printing mechanism and paper-feeding mechanism, a table for supporting the paper thus fed, means for automatically lifting the said table to compensate for the reduction ofthe pile of paper, an adjustable screw-threaded stop engaging an attachment of said table to control its upward movement, a screw-threaded rod engaging said stop 'and a pawl and ratchet and intermediate device whereby the action of said paper-feeding device feeds up the said stop approximately the thickness of a sheet of paper substantially as set forth.
