To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN E. SLICK, a citi' zen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of.
Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and-useful Improvements in Double-End Dumping-Oars, of which the following is a ,full, clear, andexact specification.

, With the type of single end-dumping cars in common use at foundries and blast fur-inaces, it is necessary to have it in a certain position at the end of the train, and also such cars can only be drawn from the end oppov site the dumping end, thereby requiring considerable switching and turning around. .4 According to this invention, an end dumping car is provided which can be turned to discharge its contents at either end of the car body,-as may be desired, and which can be coupled to other cars or a locomotive at either end, thereb permitting greater facility of handling an o eration. The car frame is composed of side members 1 1 connected by end members 2,2,, which latter will be provided at each end with the draft rigging and train couplings 3, 3. As herein shown, the car body is of the tilting and bodily movable type, the body proper bein mounted on trunnions 8 which roll on tracIrs 9 carried b the side frames 1 and simultaneously tit the car body. Rigid with the trunnions 8 are gears 10 which roll on fixedracks 11, also carried by the side frames 1.
In order to actuate the car body hand dumping mechanism is provided, which is mounted on one side of the car frame and capable of being actuated from either end of the car body. As herein shown, one-of the side frames 1 is provided with a pair of brackets 12, having u rights 13, in which a longitudinally exten ing screw-shaft 14 is mounted, and having thrust collars 15 at either end. This screw-shaft 13 works through a nut or block 17-, having a removable cap plate 18, and also a socket or box in which the reduced end 19 of one of the trunnions 8 engages, so that when the screw-shaft 14 is turned the nut 17 will be reciprocated and thereby actuate the trunnions to roll on the tracks 9 and gears 10 on the racks 11. In order to actuate the screw-shaft 14 a shaft .21 is mounted in the brackets '12 and-provided with hand-wheels 22 at each end, so that thecar can be dumped from either end. The shaft 21 is geared to the screw-shaft 14 by means of pinions 23, 24, and 25, so that b turnin the hand-wheels 22 the screw-she t l l'wilI be turned and thereby operate-the car body.
By reason of the worm-actuating connection, there will be no back thrust from the car body upon .the actuating mechanism tending to turn the hand wheels, and also the use of fastenings for holding the car in upright position may be dispensed with inasmuch as the car body will not tend to oscillate on the trunnions. One or the other of the hand wheelswill be operated to dump the ca1i,.according to the end at which it is to he dum'ped, and preferably at the. opposite end away from the heat.
As herein 'shown, the car body is made oval in cross-section so as to increase the carrying capacity, inasmuch as the transverse dlameter must be such as to ermit the top of the body to passbetween t 1e sides of either en the frame when being dum ed, and the width of the frame is limiter by the gage of the railroad. It is not intended to restrict this invention to an oval bowl, but
such a bowl will have a greater carrying capacity than would a round bowl of the same transverse diameter. As will be seen from Fig. 1, the underframe is mounted on 'four'wheels, the axles of which are carried in boxes which slide vertically in the depending portions 27 of the side frames 1 with interposed springs, and the frame may be made of a single piece casting if desired.
It will be seen from the foregoing descri tion that by use of this invention, a doub e end dumping car is rovided which permits the car body to be umped at either end of the car frame from the opposite end, at any part of the train, thereby avoiding the present necessity of having single end dumping cars' at the end of the train. Furthermore, by use of this invention a considerable amount ofswitching and turning of the car will be avoided, since end dumping cars of this type can be coupled from either end.,
'Modifications and changes in the specific construction here described can be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
Haying thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: g
1. The combination with a car frame and a car body mounted to move within the frame in opposite directions from a central upright positlon, of means for tilting the car body to direction from a central upright position, and
operable from either end of the car body.
5. The'conibination with a car frame hav-- ing side tracks, of'a tilting and longitudinally movable car body'mounted thereon, means for tilting said body in either direction from a central u right position, and operable from of the car body.
6. The combinationwith an end dum ing car body, of a frame inclosing the car b0 yin both upright and dumping positions, and
mechanical actuating means mounted on the frame for operating the car-body.
7. The combination with an end dum ing car body, of a frame in'closing the car bo y in both upright and dumping positions, and having operating means at each end.
8. The combination with a car frame having a tilting and longitudinally moving'car body mounted thereon, of'means engaging the car-body support for tilting and longitudinally moving the car body toward either end of the car frame.
9. The combination with a car frame having opposite side frames rovided with tracks, of a car body mounte to roll thereon and discharge within the side frames, a screw shaft mounted on one of the side frames, a
nut mounted thereon and having actuating connection, with the car body, and means for turning the shaft to actuate the car body.
10. The combination with a car frame having o posite side frames provided with tracks, of a car body mounted to roll thereon in either direction from a central upri ht position to discharge within the side frames, a screw shaft mounted on one of the side frames, a nut mounted thereon and having actuating connection to move the car body in either direction,-and means for turning the shaft to actuate the car body.
11. The combination With a car comprising connected side frames having tracks, of a tilting car body, trunnions on the car body mounted on said tracks, and means for simultaneously tilting and moving the car body for dumping toward the end within the frame.- 7
12. The combination with a car comprising connected side frames, of an end dum ing car body, a trunnion supported on t e car frame and carrying said car body, and a screw engaging the trunnion for simultaneously tipping and moving the car body toward the end, said car body dumping within the frame, and coupling means carried by the end of the frame.
-13. The combination with a movable car body mounted between rigidly connected side frames and supported thereby, of means for simultaneously moving and tilting the body to a discharging osition toward one end of'the frame fromv t e center, and couplin means at the discharging end.
