To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL G. PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at -West Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railway-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This'invention relates to improvements in railway ties and means for securing the rails on the ties and it consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
One object of my invention is to provide a railway tieof improved construction which may be made from a single sheet of metal.
A further object is to combine with the tie an im roved form of rail securing devices.
In t e accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the railroad tie and railway rail securing devices embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the tie. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing a modified form of the tie.

Referring first to the form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the tie 1 is made of a single sheet of metal bent in channel form to provide an upper or tread web 2 and vertically depending side webs 3. The tread ,web is formed near its ends with openings 4,

Each plate 6 is formed vwith an opening 9 from the outer side of which an arm 10 which is integral with the said plate, is bent up, to engage and bear upon the inner base flange of one of the rails. Each plate 7 is formed at its inner end with an integral arm 11 to engage the outer base flange of a rail, and having its sides turned at right angles to provide flanges 12 which bear against the outer side of the web of the rail and also bear on the outer base flange an under the outer side of the head thereof. The said plates 6 and 7 are secured on the tie by means of bolts 13.
In Fig. 5, I show a modified construction ofrail securing plate in which the plate 14 has an arm 15 bolted on the upper side thereof, as at 16, and with one end raised, as at 17 to bear on a base 'ilange of a rail.
In the form of my invention shown in F ig, 3, the tie 18 com rises a pair of channel members 19 each or which has a vertical web 20, an upper web 21 and a lower web 22. The vertlcal webs of the respective channel members bear against each other and each ofthe said webs has an opening 23 therein and an integral angle piece 24 bent out from one side of said opening and extended through the opening of the vertical web of the other angle piece and bearing between the upper,
