Description

PATBNTBD JUNE 3o, 1908. H. P. KBIL.
LOGK
APPLIOATION FILED AUG. 21. 1906.
WIITNESSES:
ATTORNEY HENRY FRANCIS KEIL, OF BRONXVILLE, NEW YORK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented .Tune 30, 1908.
Application led August 21, 1906. Serial No. 331,538.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY FRANCIS KEIL, a citizen of theUnited States of America, and a resident of Bronxville, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Lock, of which the following is a specification, the same being a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to appliances for securing in position doors and like movable articles, and in particular to locks and latches, and a supplemental 'face plate constructed and arranged to be applied to the same, said locks and latches being adapted to be inserted in a notch or recess in the stile of a door and having a combined escutcheons and face plate, and which embody certain novel ifeatures of construction, combination and arrangement of parts of simple construction and etlicient in operation, all of which will be hereinafter described and fully illustrated in the drawings.
To attain the desired end, this, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and operation of parts herein set forth.
In order to enable the invention to be fully understood, I will proceed to explain the same, by reference to the drawings illustrative of one embodiment of the invention which accompany and Vform a part of this specification7 and in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a door provided with this invention; Fig. 3 is an elevation and. Fig. 2 a plan view of the same; Fig. Llis a view of my face plate expanding device.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the views.
Referring particularly by letter to the drawings A, A1 denote my combined escutchcons and face plate which rests against the sides of a door and extends around its front edge and overlaps the notch C, and which is preferably made of sheet metal. The combined escutchcon plates A and face plate A* is of a unitary construction and so far as its functions in supporting withinthe same the lock case d (which contains a suitable lock or latch mechanism) and in serving as a covering 'for the notch or recess is concerned, may be considered as an entirety, no matter whether it is integral and is made ofa single piece of metal, as shown in Fig. l, or
whether it is composed of a plurality of plates rigidly Yfastened together.
B designates the knobs and B1 the shanks of the same which may pass through the knob roses B2 and rest against the sides of the lock ease which consists of the body d and cap di and is supported within the combined escutcheons and face plate by means of screws (l2 inserted into the vfront of the lock case through the Vface plate A1 and supplemental face plate A1.
The lock case (Z is inserted into a recess, notch or mortise O formed in the edge of the door preferably by simply sawing a piece out to the depth of the lock case, and the top and bottom edges af, of the eseutcheons and a1 of the face plate being of greater dimensions or size than the opening or recess in the door and overlapping the same, and thereby entirely cover the mortise and conceal any possible poor cutting out of the door in the' event of the same being carelessly or hastily done. The top and bottom edges a, al also serve to a'l'l'ord resistance flanges or borders or stops, in order to prevent any danger of the lock from being pulled out of its position to any degree, the lock case being also preferably provided with a retaining means as a prong d5.
The combined escuteheons and face plate not only forms a protection to the wood of the door, but the said structure is very readily applied and quickly attached to the door by simply slipping the combined escutcheons and face plate over the edge of the door and then screwing the eseutcheons in place by the screws El.
This invention is applicable to all kinds of doors to which mortise or rim locks can be attached and is manifestly applicable to both locks and latches or a combination of the two.
I provide simple means -for adapting my combined escutcheons and 'face plate to be used for doors of dierent thicknesses which preferably consists in making the saine so as to be expansible as regards the width of the face plate as, in the present embodiment, by 'forming the saine with a plaited or folded vface plate, the folds or plaits a of the same ordinarily lying between the lock case and the extensions of the escutcheons.
In case the combined escutcheons and face plate is applied to a thin door the seam between the folds a2 will be closed, but in the event of the structure being used in connection with and attached to a thick door, by
operating the screws E the folds Will be opened somewhat in order that the expanded face plate may register with and conform to the edges of the door. 1
In order to conceal the folds a2 in the face plate and to present a symmetrical appearance, no matter Whether it is applied to a thin or a thick door, I provide asupplemental face plate A4 With orifices for screws and apertures a and a7 for the lock bolt and latch. This plate is applied, to the face plate A1 and the parts are held together by means of screws d2 which pass through the orifices a5 of the supplemental face plate and the screw holes of the face plate proper.
It will be seen that I disclose herein a face plate having orifices located near the median line thereof, and means to expand the same located between the said orifices and the edges of the face plate, and that I also show a supplemental face plate having orifices to register with the orifices of the face plate, and means to attach the two together at the said orifices, whereby the edges of the face plate may be caused either to coincide with the edges of the supplemental plate, or else to be moved outwardly therefrom, the median portions ofthe two plates being adapted to register with each other all of the time.
I Wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
That I claim as my invention is;
A face plate having orifices located within the edges thereof, and means to expand the same located between the said orifices and anl edge of the face plate, in combination with a supplemental face plate having orifices to register with the orifices of the face plate, and means to attach the two together at the said orifices, whereby the edge of the face plate may be caused either to coincide with the edge of the supplemental plate7 or else to be moved away therefrom, the median portions of the two plates being adapted to register with each other all of the time.
In testimony of the foregoing specification i I do hereby sign the same in the city of New York, county and State of New York this 28th day of June 1906.
HENRY FRANCIS KEIL,
