dimmi tant Patent @time CYRUS H. HARDY, OF BATH, MAINE.
Lenen 15mm No. 89,218, dated Apel 2o, 1869.
IMPROVED KNIFE-CLEANER The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GYRUs H. HARDY, of Bath, in the county of Sagadahoc, and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife-Cleaners, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description, reference being had to the acand consists in pivoting the movable jaw to a lever,
so that the rubbing-surfaces will always conform to each other when worn away at either end, and also conform to the shape of the knife being cleaned, whether it is at and of uniform thickness, or wedgeshaped in cross-section, thereby enabling the machine to perform its work in a thorough and effectual manner; and
My invention also consists in certain details, which will be particularly described hereafter.
'lo enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings- A represents the hase of the machine, which is composed of two parallel bars, a, and a cross-piece, l), from which descends a bent arm, B, which serves, with a thumb-screw, c, to ela-mp the apparatus to a table, or other suitable suppolt.
C are curved arn1s,\vhich rise from opposite sides of the cross-piece b, and serve to support the upper, or stationary jaw D,'in which is fitted a pieceof cork, E, a similar piece of cork, Gr, being` secured to the movable jaw H, which is pivoted to the extremity of a handle, or lever, I, pivoted at l to the base A.
The pieces of cork, E G, thus form rubbers, between which the knife to he cleaned, or polished, is reciproeatedquiekly, a suitable gritty substance being employed in the operation, and the lever I being depressed bythe hand so as to bring the surfaces of the rubbers into close contact with the sides ofthe knife, the back of which rests against the projections c, which rise above the upper edge of the-cork G, and thus form a guard to steady the knife as it is moved back and forth.
By thus pivoting the movable jaw H to a lever, I, which is pivoted to the frame-work, instead of securing it rigidly to a level', as heretofore, the rubbing-surfaces will be always in contactwith the sides ofthe knife, while being cleaned, whether it is hat and of uniform thickness, or wedge-shaped in cross-section, thus enabling the machine to perform its work in a thorough and effective manner; and it will also be seen that the movement of the lower jaw will also compensate for any wearing away of the surfaces of the rubbers at either end, and cause them to fit each other at all times, as required, while, by pivoting the handle I to the frame-work, as above described, a leverage is obtained, so that a slight pressure only is 'required in operating the machine.
fare arms, which project from the movable jaw H, and lit between the curved arms C, which thus serve as guides to steady the jaw Il, and keep it in place while the knife is being cleaned.
The jaws I) II are each provided with lips, or flanges, g, which serve to hold the corks, or rubbers Ill G firmly in place, but yet allow of their being easily removed and replaced by others when worn out, and these rubbers E G, instead of being of cork, may, if desired, be formed of some other suitable material.
Claim..
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The movable jaw G, pivoted on the short arm of the lever I, and furnished Wit-h lugs, f, to guide it in the grooves of frame 0,substantia1ly as set forth.
