, lowing is a specification.
The invention relates to an electro-magnet to be operated by a varying or alternating current without chattering or similar noises resulting by reason of vibrations of the arrpature due to current variations its 001 The rinciple of the invention resides in the inec anical equilibration of-the armature against the attraction of the magnet and the takingup of the vibrations thereof due to current variations by means of a suitably placed resilient body forming the abutment of said armature. It will be observed, therefore, that l do not prevent the armature vibrations by an construction of the magnet coil itself anc thus avoid chattering; but on the contrary 1 permit them, I stoo their eil'ect upon contacts or any other rigi members controlled by the armature by stopping them out, through the mechanical balancing lid of the armature against the magnet pull and their absorption. by the inter posed resilient abutment.
The accompanying drawing is an elevation of my improved varying current magnet,
The core 13 carries on one arm the electromagnet coil A and to its other arm is pivoted the" armature C. Said coil is su ported in any suitable way upon the back ate D, and projecting from said plate is a i ed arm E supporting the rods F. The armature C carries a rod G- upon which is mounted a freely sliding plate H. Between said plate H and a flanged sleeve 1 of insulatin material, is interposed a helical spring which normally sets the late H outward against its retaining pin The plate H androds F form circuit terminals, and when in contact establish circuit from the, conduetor to conductor, said conductors bein; connected respectively to rod G and arm The elect-r0 magnet coil is connected in circuit with a source of varying current that may be derived from an alternating current generator as symbolically indicated at L.
lhe sprin J is to be so constructed as mechanica ly to equilibrate the armature against the pull of the electro magnet, and so to form the abutmentfor said armature.
. Hence when the armature is attracted to close circuit at the terminals H, F, no solid part of it meets any solid or fixed part of the apparatus against which it can chatter. After contact has been established at the terminals, and the armature has become equilibrated, the spring will then still further operate to take up such vibrations of the armature as may be caused by current vari- 'ations in the coil B, and in this way said vibrations are stopped from reaching the terminals in contact and hence from causing intermittent separations and consequent chatteringof said terminals. When the armature is in ma netic circuit with the magnet core, as is ere shown, the'device becomes more sensitive and therefore this construction is preferable.
I claim:
1. A source of alternating current, an electro magnet coil energized thereby, an armature therefor and a resilient abutment for said armature constructed to absorb the vibrations thereof due to current alternations in said coil.
2. A source of varying current, an electroma net coil, an armature, means for mechan ical y equilibrating the attraction of said magnet'u on said armatureand for taking up the vi rations of said armature due to current variations in said coil.
3. A. source of varying current, anelectro magnet coil,-an armature, and a spring for equllibratmg the attraction of sai magnet upon said armature and for taking up the vibrations of said armature due to current variations in said coil. H
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
