Description
faire @anni @it VALENTIN *.Bonsfr, or NEW YORK, N. in
' Letters Patent No. 89,196, (lated April 20, 1869.
nvrPRovED HARNESS-SADDLE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent andrmvalnug part of the same.
To all 'it may concern Be it known that I, VALENTIN Bossr, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Harness-Saddles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact' description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part oftb is specication, in which drawingstructed'of four distinct pieces of'wood, two being sit uated on each side of the tree, and connected together by rounded metallic corner-pieces, provided with flanges to straddle and retain the ends of thewooden sidepieces. y
These wooden side-pieces are further strengthened in their position by two braces, extending across the whole width ofthe saddle-tree, and provided with screwsockets, to receive and retain the teirets;
The saddle-tree is further strengthened by a metalli plate, which is secured t'o the-inner surfaces of the metallic corner-pieces and of the wooden side-pieces, and this plate is provided with holes, to receive and retain the back-band loops.
The metallic corner-pieces of the saddle-tree are provided with sockets, to admit lugs projecting from the under surface of the cantel, and a key, passing through slots in lips projecting downward from the corner-pieces, and through corresponding slots inthe lugs of the cantel, serve to fasten said cantel firmly to the tree.
The letter A designates my saddle-tree, which is constructed of four'wooden side-pieces, c a, and two metallic corner-pieces, b b, the wooden side-pieces being connected in pairs by the metallic corner-pieces, shown in iig. 1 ofthe drawing.
Each of the metallic corner-pieces is provided with flanges, c c, (sec fig. 3,) which overlap and straddle the ends or' the wooden side-pieces, so that said side-pieces can be firmly attached to the corner-pieces.
The saddle-tree is further strengthened by metallic braces, d, which4 extend across the whole width ofthe side-pieces, and are provided with screw-sockets e, t receive and retain the terrets f.
By these cross-braces the two parts of the saddletree (cach part consisting of two Wooden side-pieces and a metallic corner-piece) are firmly united, and said two parts are further connected, attheirunder sur- -v faces, by a base-plate, g,'which is made of sheet-metal,
and connected by means' of rivets to the side and corner-pieces, shown particularly in figs. 2 and 3.
This base-'plate extends beyond the side-pieces of the. saddle-tree, and it is provided with holes, h, (see iig. 2,-) to receive 'and retain the back-band loops i. This base-plate, therefore, performs the double oiice .of connecting the side-pieces of the tree, and of re-` taining the back-band loops. V
The metallic corner-pieces b b are provided with sockets, jj, (best seen in figs. 1 and 4,) to receive lugsV 7c k, which project from the bottom surface of the cantel'B.
And said corner-pieces are further provided with downwardly-projecting lips, or flanges, l l, which are perforatedwith slots, to receive akey, m, the lugs kk of the cantel being also provided with corresponding slots, sothat by means of said key the cantel can be firmly secured to the tree.
The lips, or flanges l lof the metallic comer-pieces,
also serve to strengthen said pieces, and to give an additional support to the wooden side-pieces.
By these means the construction of the saddle is Vmaterially simplified, and a strong and durable harness-saddle can be produced at a comparatively small cost.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letl ters Patent, is- 1 1. A saddle-tree,composed ofthe wooden side-pieces a a,`connected by the metallic flanged corner-pieces b b, substantially as described.
2. The cross-braces d, i-n combination with the sidepieces a a and corner-pieces b b, substantially as set forth. l
3. The base-plate g, forming the support for the/backband loops fi., and connected to the side-pieces a a and cornerpieces b b, substantially as described. 4. The lugs k lc, on the cantel B, in combination with sockets jj, in the corner-pieces b b, and with lips, or iianges l l, on said corner-pieces, and with a key, m, substantially as set forth. l
