v PA-TBNTED JUNE 30, 1908.
T E CALVERT LOAD BINDER. APPLICATION nun snr1.za.1eov.
attoutu o Wife/aw: 7 M4 THOMAS E. CALVERT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO SHEFFIELD CAR COMPANY, OF
THREE RIVERS, MICHIGAN.
LOAD-BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 30, 1908.
Application filed September 23, 1907. Serial No. 394,189.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. CALVERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Load-Binders, of which the following is a Specification.
This invention relates to improvements in load binders.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved load binder which may be very quickly adjusted and secured, is very strong, and, at the same time, one which may be readily released or disengaged.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointedout in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which,
Figure 1 is an end elevation of a structure embodying the features of my invention, it being shown in connection with a tank or cylinder for treating wood to preserve it or the like. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail section, taken on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fi 3 is an enlarged cross section, taken on a line corresponding to hne 33 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing, the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines, and similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a cylinder or tank for holding compounds for treatin wood; 2 a way in the bottom thereof and 3 die track rails. These features, however, form no part ofmy invention, and I here illustrate the same to show one application of my invention to a car or truck espe cially designed for use in this relation' My improvements are, however, adapted for use in a very great variety of relations.
The cross-sill 4 of the truck is provided with 'upwardly-proj ecting arms 5 in the upper ends of which are sockets 6. These sockets are preferably formed in the blocks 7, which are secured in the channel iron arms 5 by means of suitable rivets, as 8. The truck wheels 9 are preferably provided with guards 10 so that the tin1bers,-such as railway ties may be piled directly on the sill, making a low down truck. The load binding-bail 11 is preferably curved and formed of a metal bar or red. The bail is detachably and ad.- justably secured to the arms of the cross-sill by means of the wedge members 12, which are connected to the ends of the bail by links 13 and clevises 14. The links 13 are arranged in suitable eyes provided therefor in the small ends of the wedge members and the clevises are passed through the links and connected to the binding bail by means of the bolts 15.
The wedge members 12 are adapted to be inserted into the sockets 6 in the cross-sill and are secured therein by wedge-shaped keys 16, as clearly appears from the drawing. By this means, the bails are very securely attached to the cross-sills, and the bail may be adjusted to clamp it firmly upon the load. The bail may be quickly released by tapping the wedge keys. The keys are preferably provided with rings 17 for convenience in handling.
I thus secure in a very simple construction a very strong attaching means and a very strong binder, and one which may be adjusted to the load and quickly attached and detached; further, one which can be readily released even though the binding bail be under very great strain.-.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a truck, of a cross-sill having upwardly-projecting arms at each end, said'arms havin sockets in their upper ends; a binding bail; means for securing said bail to said cross-sill, comprising a pair of wedge members adapted to be inserted into said sockets; links secured to the small ends of said wedge members; clevises for connecting said links to said binding bail; and wedge-shaped keys for adjustably securing said wedge members in said sockets.
2. The combination with a truck, of a cross-sill havin upwardly-projecting arms at each end, said arms having sockets in their upper ends a binding bail; means for securing said bail to said cross-sill, comprising a pair of wedge members adapted to be inserted into said sockets, said wedge members being pivotally connected to said bail and I wedge-shaped keys for adjustably securing said wedge members in said sockets.
3. The combination with the body member having sockets therein, of abinding bail; wedge members adapted to be inserted into said sockets; links secured to the small ends of said Wedge members; clevises for connecting said links to said binding bail; and wedge-shaped keys for adjustably securing said wedge members in said sockets.
4. The combination with a truck of a cross sill having an upwardly opening socket therein; a binding bail, and means for securing said bail to said cross sill, comprising a pair of wedge members adapted to be inserted into said socket, said wed e members being pivotally secured to said ail and wedge sha ed keys for adjustably securing said we g'e members in said socket.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two Witnesses.
THOS. E. CALVERT. [L. s]
