BOBBIN AND WHIRL.
Specification of Lettere Patent.
Patented June SO, 1905?.
Application led February 20, 1906. SerialiNo. 302,015.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known .that I, JOSEPH W. COLLINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Im rovenients in Bobbins and Whirls, of which t e following is a specification, reference-being had therein to the'accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in bobbins or cops and has for its object to provide means whereby the bobbin may be dropped over the spindle to engage and be rotated by the whirl, rapidly revolving.
' n the operation of the ordinary spinning or twisting machine it is found necessary, for various reasons known to the art, to very often remove the bobbin from the spindle during the operation of spinning or twisting. In replacing the bobbin in position thereon, the rapidly revolving whirl has always had to be slowed down or stopped before said bobbin could be made to properly engage the same. To accomplish this purpose a friction brake was used on the whirl which held the same from rotating while the bobbin was being connected thereto, causing the driving band to slip around the whirl while being thus held.
To ohviate the stopping of the whirl I have formed a set of comparatively fine tapering teeth all around the upper face of the body of the whirl,.and I have also provided ametal plate with a set of corresponding teethon which plate is set into the lower end of the bobbin, and securely held therein, and by this construction the bobbin may be dropped over the spindle onto the rapid-ly revolving whirl and these teeth will engage each other and cause the said bobbin to rotate, without first being obliged to slow down the whirl.
The invention is fully set forth in this specification and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l` is an elevation of the bobbin showing the lower portion broken away and the toothed plate secured therein. Fig. 2-- is a central sectional View of the whirl showing the plurality of comparatively fine tapering teeth formed on theupper face thereof. Fig. 3- is a detail showing the plate having teeth on its lower 'face for engaging the whirl and while said whirl is Spurs on its ii per facey by which said plate is secured to t e wooden hobbin.
Referring tothe drawings,`the bobbin is ordinarily and preferably formed of wood or other light material, and heretofore it has been customary to cut slots through the lower end of this bobbin to receive corresponding projections on the upper face of the whirl, `but owing to the size and shape of these projections and slots the whirl had to be first stopped from rotating before the bobbincould be connected thereto.
In my improved construction I have counterbored the lower end of this hobbin at 5 to receive the plate 2, ably made of metal of considerable thickness and is countei'bored at 3.to provide a down-- wardly projecting rim. This plate is also provided on the lower face of said rim with a plurality of comparatively ne tapering teeth formed all around the edge of the same. Projecting upward from the upper face of this plate is a plurality vof integral spurs which are disposed at points between the periphery of said plate and the boro thereof adapted to be forced into the wooden'bobbin to hold the plate firmly therein.
The plate is set into the counteibored portion 5 of the bobbin with its lower face flush with the lower end of said bobhin. The whirl is preferably made of metal and on its upper face is formed a plurality 'ot comparatively fine teeth to correspond in form and number' to of the plate in the bobbin.
which )iste is ireferproperly engage those' It is obvious by this construction that the Y life of the bobbin is greatly increased by inf sertmg this toothed metal plate into its lower end, and also that by the construction or these teeth that said bobbin may be dropped over the spindle and that those Yteeh thus arranged will engage those of tho flying whirl and at once commence to rotate the .bobbin without the necessity of first slowing -down the whirl to engage the same.
v The device is extremely simple, practical and eflicient, and is alahor saver-,and by its use the production ol' the spinning, and twisting machine is greatly increased.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: In combination with tho circular whirl having a bore and a plurality oi' teeth 'formed on its upperfedge, a bobbin having a bodv ortion and an integral enlarged annular liase, said bobbin having a ore which extendstlirough its entire len t i and having a counterbored portion Whici extends ior'a distance in said base and which. is of the same diameter as said Whirl body, a metal late of considerable thickness equal to the depth of said bobbin counterbored portion having a central bore and a flat top face and having the edges of its eriphery at right angles to said top face, said plate on its under 'face being counterbored to -form a down Wardly projecting rim, teeth on ysaid rim, and
integral upwardly projecting spurs 'formed on said top face of the plate at points inter 1.5 y
n? ediate the bore and periphery of said plate, said plate having a driving fit with the Walls formed by said counter'bored portion of the spool base. Y
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 20 in presence of two Witnesses.
