Description

i i @anaal Westera-M sn e. i "Mgg/gus d eww GHARLES EGBERTS, OF LAKE VILLAGE, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
Letters Patent No. 89,170, dated Apr/il 2Q, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in theseLetters Patent and making part of the -llamal To all whom it may concern Be it known that-1, CHARLES ROBERTS, of Lake Village, in the county of Belknap, and State of New Hampshire, have invented Improvements in Spinning Machines; and I do hereby declare that the followingr is aY full and exact description thereof, reference being .had to the accompanying drawings, making part of the figures.
My improved twister consists of a short revolving tube, D, through which the roving, x, passes longitudinally, provided, at its lower or delivering-end, with two hollow cone-poihts,ff, which spring together, in the line. of the axis of the' tube, and pinch the roving sufciently to twist it, and at the same time allow the thread to be drawn along with a steady and even mo-v tion.
The tube composes its own journals, which revolve in bearings, a a, and it has a grooved pulley, d, by which the properspeed 0f revolution is imparted to it, in the same direction as the spindle revolves.
rIhe hollow cone-points f f are preferably themselves elastic, by means of elastic shanks, h h, by which the are attached, as at fi. t', to the tube D, but they might be rigid, and be pressed together by springs. And,
the force of the elasticity, if desired, may beadjustable, by anyusual means. Any unessential variation in the form or arrangement of the points f f may be adoptan i v Not only is this twister superior for its simplicity, cheapness, and efficiency, but it has a peculiarty which, in itself, is of great value, and which attains an object heretofore never reached. It is its slender-pointed form which enables it to reach within an eighth of an inch of the bearing-points of the draw-rollers F G, so-that less than a quarter of an inch of the thread remains untwisted at any time, since -all above this point is kept twisted by the cone-points, and all below the bearings of the draw-rollers is kept twisted by the spindle. Thus there is no chance for the breaking 0f the untwisted thread, or roving, nor for uneven drawing and variation inthe size of the thread.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' The holiw cone-points ff, Aheld together-by elastic pressure, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
The above specification signed by me, this 18th day of August, 1868.
CHARLES ROBERTS. Witnesses:
THOMAS HAM, I CHARLES COBURN. Y
