HARRISON P. HEWS, OF JACKSON, MAINE.
POTATO-DIGGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 23, 1908.
Application filed February 3, 1908. Serial No. 114,029.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRISON P. HEWS, citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Waldo and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Imrovements in Potato-Diggers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to potato diggers and more particularly to potato diggers of the elevator type; and it has for its object to provide a digging point for such machines, constructed with a view of preventing potatoes rolling off its sides and being buried or crushed beneath the wheels of a machine.
Other advantageous features of the inven tion will be fully understood from the following description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specificatlon, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the dig ging point constituting the best embodiment of my invention of which I am cognizant; Fi 2, a longitudinal central section of the point, and Fi 3, a cross-section of the point taken in a p ane'in front of the side bars thereof.
Similar letters designate corresponding arts in all of the views of the drawings, ireferring to which:
A is the blade of my novel point, and B B are the side bars thereof; the blade having its rear edge recessed as indicated by a and being provided with apertures 12, and the lower edges of the rear portions of the side bars being recessed or shaped as shown, in order to permit of the point being readily secured in proper position on a potato digging machine. The said side bars B are also designed and adapted to extend back on the frame of the machine and prevent potatoes from rolling laterally off the machine at such points.
In plan the blade A is shaped as shown,
and the edges of its portion in front of the side bars B are preferably beveled at their under sides, as indicated by c. It will also be seen by reference to Figs. 2 and 3 that with the exce tion of its flat portions 0 adjacent to the mner sides of the side bars B, the blade is slightly ooncavo-convex in crosssection, this latter being a highly advantageous feature since it prevents rolling of otatoes from the sides of the point, and also because it tends to draw the potatoes and dirt toward the longitudinal center of the point and assures the passage of the same to the elevator of the machine. The flat portions 0 of the blade and the before mentioned recess a are provided and the blade is apertured at b b in order to enable the point to better fit and be attached to a potato digging machine; and it will also be observed that the said flat portions 0 lend stiffness and strength to the blade as a whole.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
A digging point for use on potato digging machines, comprising a blade, and side bars; the blade having a recess and apertures in its rear end and also having fiat portions adjacent to the inner sides of the side bars, and the remainder of the blade being concavoconvex in cross-section and having its edge beveled at its under side, and the side bars formed integral with the blade and extending fore and aft of the rear edge thereof and having the lower edges of their rear portions recessed.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto setmy hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HARRISON nHEWs.
