IMPROVED GLASS-BLOWING- APPARATUS.

Tovall 'whom'it may concern:
Beit known that I, BENJAMIN F. CLOUD, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Glass-Blowing Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact' description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference' being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. 1
This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for glass-blowing, whereby the blast may be supplied by power, and regulated in the application with facility.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 represents a plan view of a furnace provided with my improvements;
Figure 2 represents a side elevation of the same; and
Figures 3, 4, and 5 represent detail views 4'of the valvemechanism for regulating the blast.

I propose to arrange around the furnace A, at a suitable elevation, a blast-supply pipe, B, to be supplied with air from any suitable fan or blower, O, propelled by power.
From the said pipe B, I suspend iexible tubes, D, in front of each of the doors or openings of the furnace, to which the operators may readily attach their blow- 'ing-tubes, by inserting the tapered ends thereof into the tapered and exible mouths of the pendent tubes, forming air-tight joints. n
To regulate the blast, I` provide a valve, E, in the said tube,'and a seat for the same, so arranged that the pressure of the air will keep it closed; and to open it, I provide a flexible and elastic bulb in the tube, at about the point most suitable for the `operator to grasp it, while operating with it, and arrange the 'levers G therein in a manner to raise the valve off its seat when the bulb is compressed and the levers moved inward thereby.
The said levers may be pivoted to the short metallic tube H, in which thevalve-seat is formed and the valve E slides, and they may be either connected to thevalve by the links I, or they may have right-angled projections frorn their pivoted ends, on which a projecting foot, R, from the valve passing below the seatmay rest, as represented in fig. 5.
This last-described arrangement I consider the most preferable, but either, or other analogous arrangement may be used.
The said valve may be uted longitudinally, as represented at L, to admit the passage of air, and it may also be provided with a spring, M, to insure its closing.
'Inthis manner the operator may be saved the labor of blowing the air, and is enabled t regulate the same with greater exactness.
The arrangement of the tube B may be varied, if preferred, as, for instance, it may be placed in the ground, and the flexible tubes supported at the right altitude by any suitable means, or other plans may be adopted, as preferred.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, witha glass-blowing furnace, of a fan-blower, G, air-supply pipe B, and lateral or pendent flexible tubes D, or their equivalentv devices, for supplying air to the glass-blowers tubes, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The flexible tubes D, provided with valve-mechanisrn for regulating the blast, and arranged for attachment to the glass-blowers tubes, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The method of raising the valves E by the levers G, operated by the flexible and elastic bulb F, andeither connected to the valve by the levers I, or supporting the projecting foot K of the same on the rightangled projections of the said arms, or any equivalent thereof, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
