PERCY CLAY, OF GIBSON,LOUISIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDWARD WRIGHT, OF
GIBSON, LOUISIANA.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERCY CLAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gibson, in the parish of Terrebonne, State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled. in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in nut locks, and it has for its object to provide a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts.
The details of construction will appear in the course of the following description, in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, like characters of reference designating similar parts throughout the several views, wherein:
Figure 1 is an end elevation of one or more nut locks constructed in accordance with the present invention and showing their application to a rail joint of conventional form. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the nut per 86. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the nut lock. Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective view of a locking key embodied in the invention.
Referring specifically to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates the parts to be secured, the numeral 2 the bolt projected therethrough, and the numeral 3 the nut threaded upon said bolt and in connection with which the device of the present invention is employed. The bolt 2 is formed from its upper end with a longitudinal recess 4, extending to a line within the body portion thereof, and the nut 3 is formed at diametrically opposite'points from its outer end with longitudinal recesses 5 of less depth than the recess 3, and designed to be brought into registry therewith, in which relation a transverse key 6 is employed to hold the parts against relative rotation. The key 6, is constructed with a central depending tongue 7 affording shoulders 8, at each side thereof which seat upon the lower edges of the recesses 5, the tongue 7 being disposed in the recess 4. The key 6 is formed at its ends with openings 9 and the nut 3 is formed on each side of the ends of said key with concave recesses 10 cut into its fiat faces and Specification of Letters Patent.

communicating with'the recesses 5. In the assembled relation of parts, the recesses 10 will register with the openings 9, and transverse curved pins 11 are projected through said openings and conformably seated in said recesses to prevent displacement of the key 6 by movement longitudinally of the nut. The pins 11 are preferably resilient and bear frictionally against the curved. walls of the recesses 10.
The nut lock embodiedin the present invention is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and practical and. ellicient in use.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that simple and efficient means are provided for accomplishing the objects of the present invention, but while the elements herein shown and described are well adapted to serve the functions set forth, it is obvious that various minor changes may be made in the proportions, shape and arrangement of the several parts, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
A nut lock of the type set forth, comprising a bolt formed with a longitudinal recess from the outer end thereof, a nut threaded upon said bolt and formed with longitudinal recesses at diametrically opposite points, said recesses extending between the bore of said nut and its outer face, and opening to the front faceof said nut, said-nut being formed on its outer face on each side of its recesses with transverse alined recesses having curved inner faces and registering with the recesses in said nut, a transverse key ongaged in the longitudinal recesses of said nut and said bolt in their registering relation, said key being formed at its ends with openings alined with said transverse recesses and transverse curved pins engaged through said openings and seated conformably in said transverse recesses, said pins bearing frictionally against the curved inner faces of said transverse recesses and having their ends projecting beyond the outer face of said nut.
In testimony whereof, I affiX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
PERCY CLAY.
