PUZZLE APPLICATION FILED 11113.4,1908.

PUZZLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 16, 1908.
Application filed March 4, 1908. Serial No. 419,160.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM MARTIN, a citizen of the United States ,residing at Perry, in the county of Noble, Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to puzzles and more particularly to thoseincluding movable members which are to be manipulated into certain positions through movement of a containing member, and has for its object to provide a puzzle of this kind which while being simple and cheap will require considerable skill to effect its solution and will thus be interesting to the operator.
Another and principal object is to provide a puzzle having particular political significance enhancing its popularity during the coming political campaign.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent in the following description.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a top plan showing the present puzzle. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the head portion of the puzzle.
Referring now to the drawings, the present puzzle comprises a body portion 5 which is in the form of the big stick which has become associated with the Republican party, this body portion including a handle 6 and a head 7. Formed in one face of the head 7, there is a conical recess 7 in which there is a conical metallic cup 9 enlarged at its apex as shown at 10, to form a pocket, which is labeled Pool. Formed in the cup 9 in a series surrounding this pocket 10 are a plurality of receptacles marked J ails and formed by pairs of U shaped ribs 15 and 16 respectively, which are struck upwardly from the middle of the cup 9. The ribs 16 are disposed with the convex sides of their bite portions 16 directed outwardly and the free ends of their arms extending toward the central cup 10. The ribs 15 are oppositely disposed and each has one of its arms disposed between the arms of the corresponding ribs 16, allportions of the ribs of each pair being in spaced relation, as shown, so that there are formed the recep tacles indicated at 17, and outwardly extending passages 18 communicating therewith.
It will be understood that the cup 9 is held in position by a confining member 1 1, which also holds in position a transparent closure 13 for the cup.
Balls 12 are located within the cup, and lie normally in the pocket 10, these balls being differently marked and being termed Grafters. The object of the puzzle is to cause the various balls to he one in each of the receptacles 17 and these receptacles are differenply marked to correspond to the different ba ls.
From the drawings and the foregoing description it will be seen that considerable difliculty will be experienced in manipulating the body portion to cause the balls to pass into the receptacles 17. As shown, slight depressions 17 are formed within the receptacles 17 so that the balls tend to remain therein.
lVhat is claimed is:
1. A puzzle comprising a cup having a pocket at its center and having a plurality of receptacles formed of pairs of U shaped ribs therewithin, one rib of each pair lying with one of its arms between the arms of the other rib of said. pair, and a plurality of movable bodies located within the cup.
2. A puzzle comprising a cup having a pocket at its center and having a plurality of receptacles formed of pairs of U shaped ribs therewithin one rib of each pair having one of its arms disposed between the arms of the other rib of said pair, one rib of each pair having a depression between its arms and a plurality of movable bodies located within the cup.
3. A puzzle comprising a body portion having a lateral handle and having a recess therein, a cup engaged in the recess, said cup having a plurality of receptacles formed of pairs of U shaped ribs, therewithin, one rib of each pair having one of its arms disposed between the arms of the other rib, and a plurality of movable bodies located within the cup.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM MARTIN.
