JOHN PETER LEANDER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ROD- PACKING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 9,1908.
Application filed January 20, 1908. Serial No. 411,642.
T 0 all whom it/may c0ncem:
Be it known that I,--JoHN PETER LEANDER,
citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use a soft or plastic packingthat will not harden under the action of friction or heat, is self lubricating and of a very lasting character.
The invention consists of a packing composed of a number of ingredients compounded together in a lastic condition.
Figure 1 is a longitu inal section of a stuffing-box showing the packing in practical use. Fig. 2 shows a section of the packing.
A represents a stufling-box, B the rings or sections of packing inserted therein, C a packed rod working therethrough and D the packing gland.
The stuifing-box is of the ordinary construction, the illustration being used to show a practical use of the packing.
The packing composition consists of tallow, graphite, fibrous hemp and lead. --The relative proportions of theseingredients for each pound of' packing is approximately as 3 ounces, graphite 4 ounces, fibrous hemp 2 ounces and lead- 7 ounces. These proportio'ns will be varied however from time to time as practical working may re uire.
he preparation of the lead ingredient is done by first reducing the same to a molten condition and then spreading it out into a thin sheeted form and dropping the same into a body of water. This will have the effect of forming it into small thin shredded strips or pieces and rendering it verytract able and yielding so as to be readily incorporated with the other ingredients.
In the process of compounding, the tallow 'is first melted and the gra hite added, next the hemp fibers, then the ead particles and the whole mixed into a homogeneous plastic inass and finally filled into the inclosing casing a.
The casings or envelops a will be composed of some suitable fabric knitted or otherwise formed and usually of a cylindrical form of convenient commercial lengths, and then out up into sections or rings as needed for practical use. be close so that just sufficient of the oleaginous part of the composition will exude to keep the packed rod properly lubricated.
The lead and hemp fibers act to cement and prevent a too rapid disintegration of the packing composition and thereby increasing its lasting qualities.
The packing will usually be round in its commercial form as shown in Fig. 1, but
when compressed in the stuffing box will readily assume the flattened form shown in Fig. 2..
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A rod-packing consisting of tallow,'
graphite, hemp fibers and lead particles, in about the proportions herein set forth.
2. A rod-packing, consisting of tallow, graphite, fibrous hemp, and dead particles, compounded together into a plastic mass and then filled into suitable casings.
3. A rod packing consisting of tallow, graphite, fibrous hemp and lead particles form'inga plastic mass and a pervious casing inclosing said mass and through which said mass exudes.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN PETER LEANDER.
