Be it known that I, ROBERT EroHMULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at INaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles, and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to non-reiillable bottles; and has for its object to provide a device to prevent bottles which have been emptied from being refilled.
Such a device may be, for example, used to prevent unscrupulous persons from refilling with an inferior liquid bottles in which some liquid of a higher grade has been sold.
Another object is lto produce a device of this kind which may be cheaply and easily manufactured, and which will be efficient and satisfactory in operation.
Herein is described a preferred embodiment of my invention. v
"While I have mentioned minute details I do not limit myself to these, but reserve the right to make such modifications in this structure as fall within the scope of the invention.
In the annexed drawings, forming a part of this specification,-I `igure 1 is a transverse sectional view of my device applied to a bottle neck; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the valve plate; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the valve spring; and Fig. 4 is a view showing the valve plate provided with a ball-retaining cage; lfig. 5 is a perspective view of the semicylindrical pieces.
As shown, my device comprises two semicylindrical pieces 1 and 2, fitted together to form a cylinder and fastened as by a suitable cement in the neck 3 of the bottle 4. Fitted in grooves 5 near the lower edges of said pieces 1 and 2 is a valve plate 6, provided with a central perforation 7 and larger radial perforations 8. Slidable vertically in said perforation 7 is the valve pin 9, to the upper end o f which is fitted a circular valve 10, of a size to completely cover the radial perforations 8, but to leave a space between it and the cylindrical pieces for the flow of the liquid.

near the pin 9, said cage consisting of cross wires 12, fastened in perforations 13 in the plate 6, as shown in Fig. 4. IIowever, I do not limit myself to the use of this cage. To prevent any tampering with the valve 10, I provide plate-like projections or lugs 14 and 15, in the pieces 1 and 2. These lugs project more than half way across the cylinder formed by the pieces 1 and 2, so that the lug 15 is projected between the ends of the lugs 14, thus preventing the insertion of a tool or the like to the valve 10. The projections v14 are spaced apart a suflicient distance to receive the projection 15 therebetween, and at the same time allow a suflicient space for the How of the liquid, all as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
An X-shaped spring 16, having a perforation 17, where its arms cross receives the pin 9. This spring has its outer ends inclined upwardly to bear against the valve plate 6, while its middle portion bears against an enlargement 18 at the lower end of the pin 9 to hold the valve 1() in place, but not with enough force to prevent the ball 11 from readily opening the valve.
Ihen it is desired to pour a liquid from the bottle merely lower the mouth of the bottle, as with any ordinary bottle, and the ball falls against the pin 9 and allows the liquid to pour out. However, after the bottle has been emptied, if it is attempted to pour a liquid into it, the spring 16, acting against the pin -9, holds the valve 10 closed, thus preventing the entrance of the liquid.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In combination a bottle semi-cylindrical pieces mounted in the neck of said bottle, each of said pieces being provided near its lower edge with internal semiannular grooves, a valve plate provided with a central perforation and eccentric perforations and resting in said grooves, a valve movable on said plate, a pin secured to said valve and passing through said central perforation a spring engaging said pin to hold said valve closed and projections on said semi-circular pieces to protect said valve' from manipulation.
2. In combination, a bottle, a pair of semi-cylindrical pieces fitted in the neck thereof, each of said pieces being provided with a semi-annular groove in the lower inner edge thereof, a circular valve plate fitted in said grooves, and provided with central and l said spring, and plate-like lugs projecting from the inner sides of said semi-Cylindrical 1 pieees each lug projecting beyond the axes l of said semi-Cylindrical pieces.
