DAVIDSON and WILLIAM Generis, citizens of the United States, both of Marseilles, in the county of Lasalle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Paper-Coating Machines; an we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a machine for coating paper or other sheet material with paraffin, or the like, of the same General character as that set forth in PatentIo. 437,435,

A machine embody our invention is moreespeciallyintende for use in coating paper in a continuous web as it comes from the paper making machine, but the features of construction constituting our invention may be also applied to a form of machine employed for coating separate sheets of. pa per or straw-board, as in the case-of the machine shown in said Howe patent. n
The object of our invention is to ini rove the construction of paper `coating mac ines of the kind referred to with respect to various features of the same, and it consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the appended claims.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawingsz-Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, with parts in section of a machine embodyin our invention. As shown in said drawings, A A.l indicate two upright frame standards located at o posite ends of the machine, and B an e ongated, shallow `trough or receptacle for par'- affin or other coating material. Said trough is made of cast metal and extends between and is attached at its ends to the upper ends of the frame uprights A A1; constituting with the latter-the main frame of the machine.

The lower roll C is mounted at its en s in stationary bearin s A2 Aa which are secured to and rise from t e upper ends of the frame standards A A. The upper roll D is mounted at its ends in bearings carried by transversel extending, horizontally arranged, ivote supporting members or arms E E1 w 'ch are connected by means of pivots e e1 with brackets A4 A5 that are attached to and rise from the upper ends of the standards A A1. The said pivots eel are located at one side of the ig. so
axes of the rolls C and D, so that rising and falling movement of the upperroll is afforded by the swinging of said arms on said pivots. The framestandards A A1 are provided near their upper ends at some distances below their top surfaces with inwardly extending, horizontal shelves a a1 (Fig. 1) on which the ends of the receptacle B rests and to which the same is bolted. Said standards A A1 are, moreover, provided with flat horizontal top surfaces to which the bearings A2 A11 for the lower roll, and the brackets A4 A5 for sustainin` the upper roll are bolted, and said horizontal top surfaces of the standards are surrounded by raised rims a2 a3 (Fig. 1) forming receptacles for lubricatin material that mayv escape from the bearings located above said frame standards.
Extending horizontally beneath the receptacle B is a steam chamber B1, the top wall v of which constitutes the bottom wall of the receptacle so that heat will readily be communicated to the contents of the receptacle, in order to retain the coating li uid, usually melted parafhn, in its liquid condition and at a desired uniform tem erature. Said steam chamber B1 is preferahly cast inte ral with the' rece tacle. Said steam cham er B1 is provide -with a supply pi e b and return pipe b1. On the shaft or journal of the lower roll C, exterior to its bearing A3, is secured a gear wheel C1 which intermeshes with a like gear wheel D1 secured to the journal of the u per roll D. On a bracket A8 is .mounted a riv'- ing shaft I which is given motion from any suitable source of ower and has attached to it a gear inion 111) which intermeshes with the gear w eel C1 of the lower roll. By the earlng described, the rolls C and D are driven so that they rotate in opposite directions at the same rate of s eed.

Said reservoir F is povided with end walls f, the margins of w 'ch, adjacent to the rol D, are curved to conform to the curvature of the roll and are in close contact with She same, to prevent the escape of the coating quid at the ends of the reservoir. The ends of the supporti arms E E1 are extended beyond the roll D at the sides thereof at which the reservoir is located, and said reservoir is supported on said arms by means of longitudinally extendin arms F1 F1 on the ends of the reservoir whic extend and are bolted to the said arms E'E1. Liquid from the reservoir F is fed to the downwardly moving sides of the roll D through a narrow space or o ening afforded between the margin of the hottom Wall of said reservoir and the adjacent surface of the roll. In order that the feed of liquid to said roll D may be exactly adjusted to give a coating of desired thickness to the aper, and in order that the quantity of liquidp fed to the roll shall be uniform throughout the entire length of the same, provision is made for adjusting the inner margins of the bottom wall of the reservoir relatively to the surface of the said roll as follows:

In the case of the lower rol its scraper is locatedlat the downwardly moving side of the roll so as to remove anl articles adheringto the surface of the rol before the same enters the li uid in the receptaclev B, and in the case o the up er roll, its scraper is located at the u warly moving side of said roll so as to ikewise remove any particles from the surface of said roll before the latter reaches the liquidin the upper reservoir F. The scraper for the upper roll consists of a bar U provided with a scraping blade u, while the-sera er for the lower roll consists of a like bar rovided with a scraping blade t. The bla es t and ful are arranged obliquely to the surfaces of the rolls C and D, so that, by the angular .or rotative adjustment of the bars T and U, to which they are attached, the edges of the blades will be pressed with more or ess force against the surfaces of the rolls. The mountings for the two Scrapers, by which they are adjustably supported, are provided with means aifording suchrrotative adjustment of said Scrapers. Said bolt Us extends upwardly through a slot in the outer end of the arm U1 and is provided with two adjusting nuts u2 and u, ocated one below and the other above the positionsl arm U2, which latter is rounded or made convex on its lpper and lower surfaces, in its y the said nuts, in the same manner as hereinbefore described in connection with the arms ofthe lowerfscra er.
The scraping blades t and u will be ma e of thin or elastic metal, so that their edges in contact with the rolls, will be adapted to act or press yieldingly on the surfaces ofthe rolls. The said blades may be secured b any suitable means to the supporting bars and U, as, for instance, by screws, as shown in the drawings.
The machine illustrated in the drawi sis provided with a top guide roll V exteiiin ongitudinally above the u per roll D and mounted at its ends in brackets V1 V1 which are attached to and rise from the arms E E1. 3. A paper coating machine comprising a machine ame, two op osing rolls, one located above the other, t e lower roll being mounted in bearings on the machine frame, horizontally arranged supporting arms ivoted to the machine frame and provided) with bearings for said upper rol1a receptacle for coating liquid located on the machine frame below the lower roll, and a reservoir for supplyingcoating liquid to 'the upper roll mounted on the said supportmg arms.
4. A paper coating machine comprisin a machine frame, two opposing rolls, one ocated above the other, the lower roll being mounted on bearings on the machine frame, horizontally arranged supporting arms pivoted to the machine frame and provided with bearings for the upper roll, a receptacle for coatin liquid located below the lower roll, a fee -regulating roll mounted on the machine frame and bearing against the upwardly moving side of the lower roll, and
ositively acting means for adjusting said eed-regulating roll relatively to the said lower roll.
' 5. A paper coating machine comprisin a machine Trame, two opposing rolls, one ocated above the other, the lower roll being mounted on bearings on the machine frame, horizontally arranged supporting arms pivoted to the machine frame and prov1ded With bearings for said upper roll, a receptacle for coating liquid located below the lower roll, a cleaning scraper for the upper roll movsera er for the lower roll mounted on the mac e frame at the downwardly moving side of said lower roll.
6. A paper coating machine comprising a machine frame, two opposing rolls, one
horizontally arranged supporting arms forthe upper roll, provided with bearings for said upper roll, said arm being pivoted to the machine frame, actuating means operating simultaneously on both arms for lifting at once both ends of said upper roll, said actuating means acting downwardly on said arms at oints exterior to thepivots thereof, and adjustable stops on the machine frame for limiting the approach of the upper toward the lower roll.
7. The combination of a machine frame, opposin upper and lower rolls, horizontall arrange supporting arms for the upper ro l ivoted between their e'nds to the machine rame, a horizontal rock-shaft mounted upon machine frame and provided with eccentrics, rods engaged withsaid eccentrics and with the outer ends of said supporting arms, and means for locking the said rock-shaft `from turning, embracin a notched wheel on the rock-shaft and a sli g detent adapted to engage said wheel.

The combinationof a machine frame, opposin upper and lower rolls, horizontally arrange su portin arms for the upper rol a horizonta rock-s aft mounted upon the machine frame and provided with eccentrics, rods en aged with said eccentrics and with the sai supporting arms, and means for locking the said rock-shaft from turning, embracing a notched wheel on the rock-shaft, a sliding detent adapted to engage said wheel, a spring applied to throw the said detent into engagement withl the notched wheel, and a f oot ever connected with said detent for releasing it from the notched wheel.

The combination of a machine frame, opposin upper and lower rolls, horizontallf arrange supporting arms for the'upper rol privoted between their ends to the machine ame, a horizontal rock-shaft provided with two eccentrics, rods connected at their upper ends with the outer ends of said supporting arms, bearing plates carried by the rods, in co'ntactvwith the lower surface of said eccentrics and means for adjusting said plates vertically upon the rods..

The combination of a machine frame, opposin `upper and lower rolls, horizontall arrange supporting arms for the upper rol ivoted between their ends to the machine ame, a horizontal rock-shaft provided with two eccentrics, rods connected at their upper arms, said rods being provided at their lower yends with yoke pieces having depending arms which extend atop osite sides of .the rock-shaft andare rovied withlaterally extending lugs, and caring .plates seated on said lugs and engaging the lower surfaces of said eccentrics.

The combination of a machine frame, opposin upper and lower rolls, horizontally arrange 'supporting arms for the upper rol ivoted between their ends to the machine ame, a horizontal rock-shaft provided with .two eccentrics, rods connected at their upper ends with the outer ends of said supporting varms and provided at their lower ends with oke pieces having laterally rojecting lugs, caring plates in contact wit the lower surand faces of said eccentrics, and set-screws inserted through the said lu s and bearing upwardly on the ends of sai bearing lates.

The combination of a machine ame, opposing upper and lower rolls, horizontallyr arrange supportin arms for the upper roll, pivoted to the madlline frame, bearlngs for the lower roll mounted on the machine frame, horizontally movable Wedge blocks interposed between said arms and the said bearings for lthe lower roll, and adjusting screws for said wedge blocks having o erative connection with the latter and wit one of the parts engaged by the Wedge block.

The combination with a rotative roll for applying coating material, of a scraper, adjusting arms connected with and giving adjusting movement to the scraper, screwthreaded adjusting bolts rigidly attached to the machine frame, and nuts applied to said bolts and ada ted to bear against opposite sides of the adljusting arms.

The combination of a machine frame, o posing upper and lower rolls mounted t ereon, a receptacle for coating material located beneath the lower roll, a feed regulating roll located at the upwardly'moving side of the lower roll, and means for adjustably supporting said roll embracing angular supporting -levers pivoted to the machine frame having upright arms provided with bearings for said feed regulating roll, and adjustmg arms rigid with said upright arms and adjusting means connecting the said adjusting arms and having bearing on 'parts rigid with said machine frame.

The combination of a machine frame, opposing upper and lower rolls, a rece tacle for coating material located beneat the lower roll, a feed regulating roll located at the upwardly moving side of said lower roll, angular supporting levers for said roll having u ri ht arms provided with bearings for said flieg regulating roll, and adjusting arms rigid with said u right arms, brackets bolted to the machine rame to which said supportling levers are pivoted, saidbracktes being provided with laterally extending lugs, screwthreaded bolts secured to said lugs, and nuts applied to said bolts at opposite sides of the said adjusting arms, said arms being provided With holes for the passage of said bolts.

The combination with a rotative roll for applying coatin material, of a cleaning scraper consisting o a sppporting bar and a scraping lblade attached to the bar and having angular relation to the surface of the ro l, said bar being mounted to turn in bearings on the machine frame, means for effecting angular adjustment of said bar, embracing adjusting arms rigidly attached to the ends of the bar, screw-threaded bolts on the machine frame, and nuts applied to said bolts and adapted to bear against opposite sides of said adjusting arms.
30. The combination with a machine frame and a rotative roller for applying coating material, of a cleaning scraper comprising a supporting bar and a scraping lade attached thereto and bearin at its edge against the surface of the ro at an angle thereto, brackets upon the machine frame provided with bearlngs for the ends of said supportin bar, adjusting arms rigidly attached to te ends of said supportlng bar'adj acent to said brackets, scre -threaded adjustin bolts aflixed to said brackets, and nuts app ed to said bolts and engaging opposite ends of said adjustin arms.
31. The combination wlth a machine frame, of a rotative roller for applying coating material, a cleaning scraper having a scraping blade, the edge of which bears against the surface of said roll at an angle thereto, brackets on the machine frame provided with bearings for thel ends 'of said scraper, said brackets havinglaterally projectlng lugs, adjusting arms rigidly attached to the en s of the scraper adjacent to said bracket, screw-threaded adjusting bolts sethe presence of two Witnesses, this 31st day cured to said lugs on the brackets, said arms of October A..
