Description

No. 890,091. PATENTED JUNE 9, 1908. W. .W. PARMETER.
DRILL ROPE COUPLING.
APPLICATION FILED APR.15, 1907.
2 SHEETS-SHEET 1r vwentoz UNITED STATES WALLACE W. PARMETER, OF ELDRED, PENNSYLVANIA.
DRILL-ROPE COUPLING To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALLACE W. PARME- TER, a citizen of the United States, residin at Eldred, in the county of McKean an State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Im rovements in -Drill- Rope Couplers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to coupling devices designed especially for connecting wires or other cables to drill tools and has forits object to provide a comparatively simple, inexpensive device of this character, which .in practice will effectually couple the cable to the tool, one which permits of the parts being conveniently disconnected when circumstances require and one whereby the cable willl be firmly and securely attached to the too With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
,In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view partly in section of a coupling device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a section taken centrally and longitudinally through the device. Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on the line 33 of Fig.2 and showing the parts on an enlarged scale. Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line 44'of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail erspective view of one section of the core. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the clamping members viewed from itsinner face. Fig. 7 is a similar-view of the plamping member a viewed from its outer ace.
Referrin to the drawings, 1 designates a tubular bo y portion or casin having a longitudinally extended interna chamber or bore 2 of conically tapered form from its lower toward its upper end and terminating at the latter in a straight portion 3, there be ing extended through the casin from the chamber 2 a central longitudinal opening 4 adapted to accommodate a cable .5.
Disposed within the chamber 2, which isinternally threaded at its lower end as at 6 for coupling engagement with a drill tool, is a tubular core 7 conically tapered to conform to the chamber 2 and. comprising a pair of 1 component parts or sections 8 having at their up er ends reduced threaded extensions 9 an at their lower ends transverse grooves forming seats 10, there bein' rejected downwardly from the lower emfs of the sec- Specification of Letters Patent.

projectthrough openin s 12- rovided in a clamping member or dis 13 a a ted to seat beneath the slotted lower end of the core and to be held in lace by means of nuts 14 ta ed onto thelower ends of the pins 11. p e sections of the core 7, which is provided on its interior with a pair of opposed splines or feathers 15, are connected in assembled order by means of a couplin nut 16 threaded onto the extensions 9 whic it will be understood are of semi-circular form in cross section and conjointly form a reduced tubularneck havin a longitudinal passage or bore 17 dispose inalinement with the bore 4 to accommodate the cable 5 and leading upwardly from the chamber 18 formed in the core 7, it being observed that the nut 16 is in practice received within the straight portion 3 of the chamber 2. I
Arranged within the core chamber 18 is a pair of cooperating clampin members 19 of diminishingly tapered form from their lower toward their upper ends and rovided on their outer faces with opposed ongitudinal a ainst rotation relative to t e core 7, the c amping members which are of semi-circular form in cross section to conjointly embrace the cable 5, being provided on their inner faces with spiral grooves 21 pitched to conform to and receive the twisted strands of the cable. v
' The cable 5 is untwisted at its lower end -throughout a suitable portion of its length to provide separate strands 22 ada ted to seat severally in the grooves 10, w ile applied around the cable at the upper ends of the loose'strands is a tie member or band 23 which serves to confine and prevent further untwisting of the cable strands.
nally through the outer casing 1 and the sections of the core-7 containing the clam ing members 19 applied and secured by t e coupling nut 16 which, as will be understood, is'passed onto the cable before applyin the sections of the core to the latter. strands 22 are then seated in the grooves 10 by the nuts 14. After the parts of the coupling have been assembled the core is drawn tions 8 engaging pins or stems 11 adapted to The oose grooves or channels'20 designed to receive the splines 15 to fix the clam ing members- In practice, to assemble the parts of the coupling the cable is first passed longitudiand secured by the clamping disk 13 which is seated upon the pins 11 and fixed in place.
upward into the casing 1v and the latter screwed onto the end of the drill 2;
It will be particularly observed that owing to strands 22 being clamped in the slots 10 by means of the disk 13 and the cable engaging at a oint above its lower end by means of the c ampin members '19 which will under the action 0? upward strain on the cable be caused to clam the latter, the cable is securel heldagamst disengagement fromthe cou ing and consequently from the tool, wh' e at the same time the parts may be readily disconnected when circumstancesre ulre.
hat-I claim is: 1. A coupling device of the type described comprising a casing having an internal cham ber of reduced diameter at its inner end, said casing being formed for engagement withatool and having an opening or bore to accommodate an operating ro e, a core arranged in said chamber and aving-a lon itudinal bore through which the rope exten s, a pair of cooperating clamping members arranged withm the core and having s iral grooves toconform to the spiral twist o the rope, and a clam ing plate secured to the end of the core and adapted to cooperate with the latter to clamp the loose strands of the'cooperating ropes extending around the outer end of the core. I
2. A coupling device of the class described comprisin a casing having an internal chamber conica y tapered from its outer toward its inner end, said casing being formed for engagement, with a drill tool and provided with a rope receiving bore leading from said chamber, a hollow core arranged within and conically tapered to'conform to said chamber, said core being provided with a longitudinal o ening to receive the rope and at its 0 ber, a hollow core tted against movement in one direction within the chamber, said core consisting of a pair of component sections,
means for detachably connecting said sections together, a rope extended into the casing and through the core and provided at the outer end of the latterwith a plurality of loose strands, cooperating clamping members arran ed in the core and internally grooved to %t the twisted strands of the rope, the clamping members and nner walls of the core being tapered to cause a clamping ac tion of the members under movement in one direction, the loose strands of the rope being ada ted to extend around the adjacent end of t e core, and a clam ing late removably attached to the latter or o ampin'g engagement with said strands.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
