To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ldALCOLM MCLENNAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the, town of Monroe, in the county of Snohomish and State of ashington, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Brake Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in brake mechanism and aims primarily to provide an efiicient ratchet operating device, particularly adapted for use on logging trucks, which is comparatively simple in construction, embracing but few parts which. are not liable to be readily broken.
A further object resides in the provision of a device of this character which can be readshaft of the brake mechanism, as desired.
Other objects will be set forth as the description progresses and those structural fea tures and combinations of parts, in which the invention resides, succinctly defined in the ap ended claims.

In the accompanying drawing l have illusplied to the winding shaft 1 of. the brake mechanism of a logging truck 2-, of well known construction. Winding shaft 1 is horizontally disposed and has one end per tion projecting outwardly beyond one side of the truck, whereby said shaft can be operated while the truck is inmotion by a person standing alongsideof the track, as is well understood. This projecting end portion of shaft 1 is reduced in diameter to provide a shoulder 1, and from saio shouider outwardly is formed square in cross section for reception of the ratchet wheel. 3 of my im proved device. Ratchet wheel is held lirmly against shoulder 1 by a nut 4.
Reference numeral 5 indicates a housing in which ratchet wheel 3 is received, said housing being formed of two longitudinal sections supported forrotation on the 'unthreadcd end portion of said ratchet wheel, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4. The component sections of housing 5 are provided with extensions 5, formed with recesses which provide a socket 6 for reception of an operating handle 6. v
Reference numeral 7 indicates suitable dogs which are pivotally mounted in recesses provided in the contiguous faces of the res ective sections of housings 5 by pins 8. 'lhese dogs are yieldingly held in engagement with the teeth of ratchet wheel 3 by springs 9. The outer section of housing 5 15' formed with an opening 10 through which nut 4 can be removed when it is desired to remove the entire device from shaft 1; Bolts 11 are employed for securing the sections of housing 5 together.
To inspect the interior of the ratchet device whenit s in position of shaft 1, it is merely necessary to remove the outer section of housing 5, this being accomplished by removing the bolts 11 and bolts 11', the latter of which secure handle 6, against accidental displacement.
Reference numeral 12 indicates the ordinary pawl and ratchet mechanism for pre venting accidental unwinding of shaft 1.
By my invention the brake mechanism of a logging truck can be set in a more eliicient manner than by the means now employed, and further it will be observed that handle 6, when occupying the position illustrated in Fig. 1, as when not in use, will not be injured should it strike an obstruction, as it is freeto swing, as will be readily understood. If desired, handle 6 need not be secured in the socket 6, being only inserted by the brake man, when it is desired to apply the brakes.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention which will operate in a satisfactory'manner, I reserve the right to make changes and alterations in the minor details of construction as defined in the appended claims.-
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is:
1. in combination with the truck and brake mechanism thereof including winding shaft projecting outwardly from the side of said truck, a ratchet mechanis .1 comprising a ratchet wheel fixed to the projecting end portion of said winding shaft and a rotatablecarrier in which said ratchet wheel is arranged, said carrier being provided with dogs engaged with said ratchet wheel and being formed ith a socket, and a handle removably arranged in the socket of said carrier.
2. In combination with the truck and the brake mechanism thereof including a winding shaft projecting outwardly from one side of said truck, the )rojecting end portion of said winding shaft being angular in cross sec tion and formed with a shoulder, a ratchet wheel arranged on the projecting end portion of said winding shaft, a nut securing said ratchet wheel against the shoulder of said winding shaft, said ratchet wheel having untoothed end portions, a housing rotatably supported on the end portion of said ratchet heel, dogs carried by said housing normally engaging said ratchet wheel, said housing being provided with a socket, and a handle rernovably secured in the socket of said housmg. a
3. In combination with the truck and the brake mechanism thereof including a winding shaft projecting outwardly from one side of said truck, the rejecting end portion of said winding shaft being angular in cross section and formed with a shoulder, a ratchet wheel arranged on the projecting end portion of said winding shaft, a nut securing said ratchet wheel against the shoulder of said wiudin-z shaft said ratchet wheel having unwheel, the outer of the sections of said hous- ,ing being formed with an opening through which said nut can be removed, means removably securing the sections of said housing together, and a handle secured to said housing.
4. In combination with the winding shaft of a brake mechanism, a ratchetwheel thereon, a housing in which said ratchet wheel is arranged, said housing being formed in longitudinal sections formed with openings through which said shaft projects, a nut on said shaft for preventing displacement ofsaid ratchet wheel, pawls in said housing engaging said ratchet wheel, said housing being formed with a socket, and a'handle secured in said socket.
