Description

FRANK KLOUSNITZER, OF HERMAN, PENNSYLVANIA.
METALLIC TIE AND RAIL-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented .Tune 2, 1908.
Application filed. July 6, 1907. Serial No. 382,535.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK KLoUsNiTZER, a subject of the Emperor-of Austria, residing at Herman, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Ties and Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a speciiication, reference4 being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to metallic ties and rail fasteners, and the invention has for its primary ob'j ect to dispense with the use of an ordinary wooden tie or sleeper commonly employed for supporting rails.
Another obj ect of this invention is to provide a metallic tie of a strong and durable construction, to which the confronting ends of said rails can be easily and quickly secured.
A further object of this invention is to provide a metallic tie that cannot be easily displaced, the tie being constructed to allow water to pass therethrough, without interfering with the road bed or foundation of said tie.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a metallic tie that can be easily and quickly laid in a stone ballast and. on sand road bed, thereby providing a tie that can be universally used, thus reducing the eX- pense of maintenance in connection with a railroad and at the same time securing perfect safety of the rolling stock passing over said ties.
Vith the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
bars used in connection with the tie, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a pair of splicedbars, Fig. 5 is a plan view of a tie, in blank and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a tie particularly designed for sand or loamy soils.
I construct my improved tie of a sheet of metal 1 having reduced ends 2. The sheet of metal is bent to provide a tubular or cylindrical structure, while the reduced ends 2 of kthe sheet of metal are bent downwardly and constituting anchors which engage in the ballast of a road bed or foundation of a rail- Way track. The sheet of metal previously to being bent into a cylindrical or vtubular form is punched or drilled to form a plurality of apertures 3, adapted to receive bolts which secure the splice bars to the tie.
The splice bars adapted to engage the outer sides of the rails 4 are formed by providing a semi-cylindrical sleeve 5 adapted to it upon the tie, the ends of said sleeve being apertured as at 6 whereby said sleeves can be secured to the tie by bolts 7 and nuts 8 the said bolts extending through the apertures 3 in the tie. The sleeves 5 carry integral saddle plates 9 and splice bars 10, the saddle plates forming seats for the rails 4, and the splice bars being apertured as at 11, to permit of nuts and bolts 12 being employed (for securing the confronting ends of rails 4 upon the saddle plates 9.
The splice bars used for bracing thek inner sides of the rails 4 consist of sleeves 14 having apertured ends 15 adapted to be secured to the tie by nuts and bolts similar to the bolt 7 and nuts 8 previously described. Formed integral with the sleeves 14 are splice bars 16 which are apertured as at 17 to accommodate the nuts and bolts 12 previously mentioned.
The reduced ends of the sheet of metal are provided where the tie is to be used in connection with a well ballasted road bed, but in case the tie is to be used upon a soil of a loamy nature, the reduced ends are dispensed with, and curved plates 18 are employed for forming a substantial foundation for the ties, these plates constituting the anchor as Well as preventin the ties from sinking into the sand or loamy gballasted foundation of a railroad track.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawing, it will be observed that the ties can be easily and quickly formed, and the outer splice bars 10'secured thereto previously to the placing of said ties upon a road bed. The rails 4 can then be placed in position, and the inner splice bar 16 secured to the ties to brace the inner sides of said rails.
As illustrated the ties can be stamped and sheared from sheet metal and then bent to the desired form, while the splice bars can be forged to provide strong and durable means for retaining the confronting ends of two rails upon said ties.
I-Iaving fully described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a metallic tie and rail fastener, the combination With rails, of a tie consisting of a sheet of metal having reduced ends, said sheet of metal being bent to a cylindrical form with dependinoP ends, splice bars secured to said tie, sairI splice bars comprisin sleeves7 saddle plates carried by some of sail sleeves for supporting said rails, and means for securing said splice bars to said rails.
2. In a metallic tie and-rail fastener, the
combination With rails, of a cylindrical tie, splice bars secured to said tie, said splice bars 15 embodying sleeves, saddle plates carried by some of said sleeves for supporting said rails, and means for securing said splice bars to said rails.
Intestimony whereof I affix my signature 20 in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
FRANK KLOUSNITZER.
