Description

@that BENJAMIN F. WILSON. OF GEDDES, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 88,933, dated April .13, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT STOP-VALVES FOR STEAM AND OTHIEI'B. ENG-INERY.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of 'the saine.
To whom it ma/y concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN-F. WILsoN, of Geddes,.in the county of Onondaga, in the State .of 4N ew York, have invented a new and useful vImprovement in Stop-Valves for the purpose of opening and closing pipes for the conveying of water, steam, gas, or other liquids and fluids, rendering them more certain in action, and more durablethan those heretofore constructed; aridI do hereby declare that the foIlowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had 'to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speciication, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, and.
Figure 2, a longitudinal section.
A is the withdrawing chamber;
a a2, valve-plates;
b bi", valve-seats; and
. B, adjusting-screw.
The nature of my invention consists in providing an adjusting-screw to operate between the two valveplates of a double-seated stop valve, so as to hold the plates apart, and I'n rigid contact with the seats, and to compensate for the wear of seats and valve-plates by operating the screw.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. i
The case of the valve is made of suitable form and inaterial, for the purpose designed.
The valve-seats are inclined as shown at b b2.
The valve-plates a a? are inclined on their faces to correspond to the seats.
. The rounded head of screw B in valve-plate a coming in contact -with the rounded projection on the back of plate a, sustainsthe valve-plates the proper distance apart, and allows to each plate liberty to rock on the other, and to adapt itself to its seat independently of the other.
The operation of my improvement is as follows: With long use, the valve-plates and seats will wear Vso that the valve will goteo far-down'rn the seats, and strike the bottom of the case, and the valve-plates will not be forced against the seats with suicient force to ,preventil'eaking When this occurs, the screw B is to be turned back, and a thin washer put under the head, which will cause the valve-plates to be forced out against the seats.
This improvement will be Afound very useful and convenient in constructing the valves, as it will obviate the necessity for such accuracy in making the valveplates the proper thickness to ll the space between the seats.
I do not claim making a stop-valve with double inclined seats, and inclined valve-plates, the same having been used before.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The adjusting-screw B, when combined and arranged tially asherein set forth.
BENJAMIN F. WILSON. Witnesses:
WILLIAM MERRILL, EDM. F. BROWN.
with reference to the valve-plates and seats, substan- I
