PIPE-LIFTER.
Specification 01 Letters Patent.
Application filed October 24, '1905.
Patented May 26, 1908.
Serial No. 284,181.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAHLON E. LAYNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the Stateof Texas, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Pipe-Lifters, of which the ollowing is a specification.
-M invention relates to means for lifting and olding pi es used in wells and the like,
and particular y to means upon such ipe lifters for grippingthe pipe tightly in ace and holding it against turning in the lifter. The primer objects of my'invention are to provide a cl am or lifter with means to (prevent the pipe i rom turning therein an to better support the lifter and hold the pifpe more securely, and to rovide means or "ripping both a section 0 pi e and the couplin that connects it with t e next section. Other objects and advantages will hereinafter a pear. I have shown the invention in pre erred forms in. the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a top plan view, and Figure 2 is a side elevation of my improved pipe lifter with a piece of pipe and the clutch attached thereto, Figure 2 showing, the clutch released;
Figure 3 is a central vertical section of the samewith my improvements ap lied thereto; Figure 4 is a central vertica section and half side elevation of a modified form of pipe lifter-having a doubleclutch embodyin m improvement attachedthereto so that both the pipe and the coupling may be held against turning, and .1; A
'Figures5' and 6 are a plan and side elevat1 on respectively'fof the modified form 'of pigs lifter shown in Figure 4.
- he pipe lifter 'itself comprises, essen-f tially, two horizontally swinging pivoted jaws 5 and 6 which are joined together-by a vertical ivot pin 7- at one side, and on'the.
. other si e have respectivelyprojpcting lugs or arms 8 and 9, which, when rought toglelther are held" by a clip 10 pivoted. in one of e jaws and designed to rest in -'a notch on top of the arms of the lifter, aslsliown in Figures. 1 and 2, and presents a flat surface 1 1 upon which the cou ling collar of the pipe restsv to hold the said link 10 in place .as more clearly shown in Fi re 3. The rear end of one of the jaws of the ifter also has a projecting arm- 14, and both the arms 8 and 14.,are notched so as to engage a rod 13 which may form a fixed part of the table or platform upon which the operating tools are supporte for manipulating the pipe in lowering or lifting it from the well.
It will be understood that in ordinary operation a section of pipe having a cou ling sleeve thereon as shown in Figure 3 Wll be surrounded by the two 'aws 5 and 6, and will support the pipe by a utment against the lower side of the sleeve 18 of the pipe. Re-
ferring to Figures 1, 2 and 3, particularly, it y will be seen that I have mounted upon the pivot pin 7 which hinges the two jaws 5 and 6 a revo uble clutch 19 which is provided. with teeth 20 to enga e the coupling sleeve 18 of the ipe. The b ock 19 has an u wardly exten ing head 19* which is. of suc form as to allow of turnin it with a wrench, and it is held upon the pm 7 by means of a cotter pin 21 as will be understood. I prefer to make the clutch 19 with teeth on four of its sides, so that it will engage the pipe against turning in either one of two directions, and when reversed will present a fresh set of teeth in case the ones on one side are worn. From Figure 3 it will be seen that I have provided in the clutch block 19 a pair of recesses which contain pointed pins 22 pressed downward by coil springs and designed to set in countersunk note as or holes provided in one of the jaws 5 or-6, as may be convenient. This is to hold the clutch block 19 temporarily in lace in Whatever position it may be put.
he form of the clutch, it will be observed, is such that the effort of the pipe to revolve it around its pivoting pin 7 will cause it to clutch the pi e more tightly and therefore will securely old the same. At the same time the jaws 5'and 6, themselves, are prevented from turning by their en agement with the stationary cross-bars 13, w ich may be any part of the platform or table for supportin ,the pipe.
In igures 1, 2 and 3, I have shown an improved form of the pipe lifter in which the aw 8 is made wide and provided with a notch 12, to engage the rod 13, and also with an elongated slot in which the clip or link 10 is mounted in such a manner that it will have suflicient play to fit in its place nicely when 1 the piipe sleeve 18 comes down-and rests upon the at portion 11. The elongated slot also ermits of the link being raised and thrown Back for the purpose of unlocking the jaws. The lower ortion of the arm 9 is cut away as shown in Figure 2, so as to allow the jaws to be opened when the link is thrown back.
In Figure 4, 5 and 6 I have shown a slightly diiferent manner of secu the lifter u on the rods 13, and also a rovision for hol ing both the pipe 17 an the accompanying sleeve 18 agalnst turning. The lifter in this instance is held in position upon the rod 13 by means of downwardly projecting lugs 12, formed upon the arms- 8 and 14, said lugs abutting against the inner sides of the rod 13. The arm 8 is further provided with a rest or abutment 8 for the arm 9, said abutment 8 projecting from the arm 8 a distance equal to the thickness of the arm 9. The pipe 17 is prevented from turning by means of an additional clam ing block 19 mounted upon the ivot pin 7 elow the pipe coupling 18. Said block is provided with teeth 20 which ongage the pipe 17 and prevent its turning in a manner similar to the toothed block 19.
The jaws 5 and 6, in all cases, have laterally extending lugs 15 with eyes which engage the lifting links 16 'for en agement with the elevator chain hook as will e understood.
'Having thus described In invention and illustrated its use, what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is thefollowing: I
1. A pipe lifter comprising a pair of fipivoted jaws, and a rotatable cam clutch ed u on one of said jaws and adapted to engage t e member inclosed betweenthem with a wedging action and hold itself in secure engagement therewith.
2. The combination with two lifter jaws 5 and 6, of the pivoted cam clutch block 19.
provided with a plurality of engaging teeth adapted to en age the member to be supported in the li ter, to prevent the same from tu substantially as described.
3. T e combination with a lifter comprising a pair of relatively movable jaws having means to hold them closed, and a pivot pin for securing the jaws together of a clutch block mounted upon the pivoting pin of said 'aws and adapts to engage the member to e held in the jaws.
4. The combination with a lifter comprising a pair of jaws and a lpivot pin for sec them to ether, of a dou 1e faced clutch bloc mounte upon the pivot pin of the jaws and having teeth adapts to engage the member to be held on either side of the medial line in order to prevent the pipe from turning in either direction, substantially as described.
5. A lifter comprising .a pair of pivoted jaws having laterally extended arms and notchesin said arms to engage bars or other stationary parts of a table or platform, and a clutch to engage the member in the jaws.
6. In a pi e lifter the combination with a pair of jaws or engaging the pipe and a pivot infor securing the jaws together, ofa ehp for old' the free ends of the jaws together, and a ouble ended clutch mounted u on the pivoting pin of the jaws and adapte to engage the pi e coupling either side of the center line w en the pipe is supported in the aws. I
- 7 In a pipe lifter comprising a pivot pin, a pair of jaws pivoted thereon, 'and a pair of clutches mounted upon the pivoting pin of .the jaws and adapted to engage respectively the pipe and the coupling for two sections of pipe, substantially as described. n testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of the two subscribed witnesses.
