PATENT oFFroE.
BARTLET KREUZBERGER, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
KEYLESS COMBINATION-PADLOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. May 26, 1908.
Application filed November 26, 1906. Serial No. 345,257.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARTLET KREUZBER- GER, a citizen of'the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Keyless Combination-Padlocks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved combination padlock, and it consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed;
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a side elevation of a padlock embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, taken on the plane which discloses the shackle; Fig. 3 is partly a section and partly a top plan view of the same; and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view, taken on the plane indicated by the line aa of Fig. 3.
The body of my improved padlock comprises the central portion 1, the base portion 2, and the removable top 3. The base portion is preferably formed integrally with the central portion and projects beyond the ends thereof, as at 4. Tubes 5, which form the bearings for the disks 6, rise from the centers of the projecting base portions 4, and are provided on their opposing sides with slots 7, which extend lengthwise thereof. The said tubes also serve to receive parallel arms 8 of the shackle 9, and the slots in the said tubes serve to clear the wards 10 of the said arms, so that the said wards project inwardly from said tubes. At the upper end of the central portion 1 of the body of the lock, at the sides thereof, are upwardlyprojecting dove-tailed flanges 11. The same fit in dove-tailed notches 12 in the sides of the top 3. The said top is provided with openings 14, which register with the tubes 5 that form the guides for the shackle-arms and the bearings for the disks. The said disks 6 are placed on the said tubes, between the projecting base portions 4 and the projecting ends of the top 3, and are rotatable on the said tubes and are each provided with peripheral numbers or other designations. Each disk has a central opening 16 for one of said tubes, an annular recess 17 of sufficient diameter to clear the wards of the shackle, and a radial opening 18 to also clear the wards of the shackle, while the upper side of the annular recess 17 forms a shoulder 19 to bear on the adjacent ward of the shackle when the disk is turned so that its opening 18 will be out of register with said ward. The top 3 may be detachably secured to the upper end of the body by means of a screw 20 or other suitable device. The openings 14 in the ends of the said top are suflicient in size to receive the upper end of the tubes 5.
It will be understood that the top and the bottom portions of the lock body serve to retain the disks on the tubes 5, and that arms in the said tubes and the wards engaged by the shoulders 19 of the said disks, that said disks securely fasten the shackle, so that the lock cannot be opened and the shackle released without having first turned all of the disks to cause their openings 18 to register and aline with the wards of the shackle, which can only be done by a person who knows the combination of the respective series of disks. By trans osing the disks, the combination ma be c anged, as may be understood. The ody of the lock and the top 3 thereof, are provided on one side with indicating marks or grooves 22 for alinement with the appropriate marks on the peripheries of the combination disks. The sides of the body portion 1 of the lock are recessed or hollowed to receive the oposing edges of the two sets or series of combination disks.
Formed in the removable top 3 is a longitudinally-extending dove-tailed channel 23 which receives a dove-tailed protecting plate or slide 24 designed to cover the head of the screw 20 and prevent its removal, thus to insure against unauthorized removal of the top 3, there being formed in the slide an opening 25 through which one of the shackles pass for locking the slide in place. The plate is also provided with a keyhole slot at its opposite end to receive the opposite shackle arm.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what when the shackle has been placed with its I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,
In a lock of the class described, a central body portion having at its upper end vertical dovetailed flanges, and at its lower end a transverse portion, separate independent tubes secured to the transverse ortion and each having in its inner side a ongitudinal slot, a shackle having arms insertible into said tubes and provided with lateral wards .received by said longitudinal slots, disks rotatably mounted upon said tubesand having radial slots adapted to be brought into register with said longitudinal slots for the passage of said wards as in inserting they? shackle arms into and removing them from i said tubes, said disks resting immediately one upon the other and having flanges adapted to be engaged by said wards and having thereon suitable indicia, a removable cap plate seated on the upper end of said body portion over said disks and having dovetail recesses to receive said flanges of said body portion, fastening means for securing said plate in place, said cap plate having apertures for the passage of said shackle arms and also a dovetail channel, and a plate seated in said channel to cover the cap plate securing means, said plate being apertured to receive the arms of the shackle.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
BARTLET KREUZBERGER.
