Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 26, 1908.'
Application led April 1l, 1907. Serial No. 367,647.
To all i12/com 'it may concern:
Be it known that l, llAltnY l1. ScnUFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at l Marietta, in the county of Washington and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in `Piano-Benches, of which the following is a spcciiication.
M'y invention relates to piano benches, and has particular reference to a duet bench which may be raised and lowered to suit the players, and the object thereof is to provide a mechanism which will retain its rigidity and appearance when in the raised position.
My invention specifically resides in the following features of construction and arrangement as hereinafter described and pointed out in the accompanying drawings, in which,
longitudinal sectional view through aI piano benchconstructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modified arrangement to be hereinafter specificall referred to.
n the practical embodiment of my invention I provide the bench body 10, supported b the legs 11, and provided with an adjusta le seat board 12. Depending from the seat board 12 at either end thereof are the rack bars 13, provided with a rack 14 thereon, and arranged through openings 15 in the bench body 10. Arranged within the body 10 below the openings 15 are guide frames 16, through which the rackv bars 13 are slidably arranged, said guide frames being provided with rollers 17, projecting through a longitudinal slot or opening '18 in the rack bar'13. Slidably mounted through a bracket 19, attached to the guide frames 16, are the locking dogs 20, normally ressed into engagement by means of a leaf spring 21, and adapted to be withdrawn from engagement therewith by means of the angular arms 22, mounted onthe ends of the operating rod or shaft 23. A handle 24 rigidly connected to the rod 23 intermediate its ends is adapted to be moved downwardly to rock said rod 23, and move the angular extension 22 thereof to withdraw the dog 20 from engagement with the rack 14 to allow the seat 12 to be raised Without operating the mechanism.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 3 the rack bars 13 are providedwith faced racks 25, and are mounted through guide frames 16, provided with an angular extension plate 2G, on which is.v Inoulited the bracket li) which carries the locking dog 20. ln this forni l mounted through the bench body 10 in brackets 28, and provided with an olier'aling plate 2i) keyed or otherwise rigidly secured to move therewith and having connecting rods 30 secured inits upper and lower extensions on a plane transverse to the plane of the rod 27. i secured at their other ends to the locking dogs 20 at opposite ends of the bench, and are adapted to withdraw said dogs from engagement with their respective racks 25 on a partial rotation of the operating rod 27 by means of its handlel. Thus it will be seen that I provide a simple and inexpensive ar rangement whereby the bench in all its adjustments will maintain a desired rigidity and appearance.
Having thus fully described my invention I claim:
1. In an adjustable piano-bench, the combination with a stationary body, of a seat board provided with depending rackbars slidably mounted through said body and having central longitudinal slots therein, plates secured within said body and havin guides formed thereon through which sait rack bar works', and having rollers mounted thereon for engagement within said slots, locking dogs arran ed for engagement with said rack bars, gui es formed on said plates for the reception of said dogs, leaf springs se` cured within said body and bearing against said dogs to hold the same in engagement with said rack bars, and a rock shaft suitably The connecting rods 3() are' ,co provide a transverse operating rod 2,7 .v
journaled within said body and provided with angular extensions secured to said dogs to withdraw the same upon the rotation of said shaft, and a handle for rotating said shaft having adjustable connection therewith, substantially as described.
2. In an adjustable piano-bench, the com' bination with a stationary body, of a sea-t board provided with depending rack hars slidably mounted through said body having central lonwitudinal slots therein, platesv secured within said body having uides formed thereon through which said rae bars work and rollers mounted thereon for engagement within said slots, locking dogs arranged for engagement with said rack bars, guides on said plates for. the reception ofv formed -said dogs, leaf springs secured within said able connection with said shat, substantially l0 body and bearing against said dogs to hohl as described.
