Franklin, in the county of Vei'iango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new 'and useful Improvements in Means for Handlin Paving Blocks or Bricks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which. it appertains to make and use. the

My invention relates to improved means .for handling paving bricks or blocks and more particularly to improvements upon that for which Letters-Patent were granted to me on the 22nd.. day of September 1896, and designated by Number 568,147.

The ends of the platform are provided with recesses 4 and the bars 2 are made with recesses 5 at respective sides of the platform for purposes which will be hereinafter explained. v I

To look the parts in the position just described the operating lever 17 is provided with a detent 25 to engage a toothed segment 26 secured to the frame 6. The lugs or block 23 are made of greater length than the lugs or blocks 24; alternate with the latter and project into the notches 4 at the adjacent end of the platform 3. The lugs or blocks 23-'2 1 are provided with sockets to receive'pins 27 located within one end mem ber of the frame 6 and behind each lug or block 23-24, a spring 28 is located. From this construction and arrangement of arts it will be seen that when-a tier of brie s or blocks located upon the platform 3 is clamped longitudinally between the ends of the frame 6, one end of each row of bricks or blocks will engage a yielding lug or block (23 or 24) at one end of the frame and the other end of each row will be engaged by the bar 11 or one of the lugs 12 on the latter. The end bricks or blocks of the rows which engage the bar llatone end will engage the shorter yielding blocks 23 at the opposite end of the the bricks of frame while the alternate rows of bricks or blocks will be clamped between the lugs 12 and the longer yielding blocks 24, thus causs of one row to break-joint with the adjacent row. The yielding blocks 23-24 are maintained ing the brick in a proper upright position by means of pins 29 entering s ots 30 in said yielding blocks.
In order to clamp a tier of bricks transvprsely or sidewise within the frame 6, clamping bars or members 31 are hinged to the respective side members of said frame 6 and these clamping members 31 are moved inwardly to clamp the bricks in place by means oflcams or lugs 32 shafts l8 and 19. Should it be desired to clamp the bricks endwise only, the connecting rod 35 will be dis from therod 34.
