Application filed February 11, 1907. Serial No. 256,791.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH O. CALnoU a citizen of the United States ofAmerica, re-
siding at Holland, in the county of Ottawa 5 and State of Michigan, have inventcdcertain new and useful Improvements in Pads for Photographic-Printing Machines; and I do hereby declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact description 0 the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to and more particularly which it appertains to make and use the same. I My invention relates to improvements in pads for photographic printmg machines are shown in my co-pendin application, Serial Number 317,275, filed ay 17 1906, for photographic printing machines, and its ob Ject'is to provide an improved pad, having a 20 smooth and yleldlng surface to engage the photographic paper and hold the same in contactwith the negative, and to provide the same with "VHHOUS new and useful fea tures hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, refen once being had to the accompanying drawin s, in whichz.
igure 1. is a perspective view of a device embod ing my lnvention; Fig. 2. is a plan view 0 the same with the panel and flexible facing removed; Fig. 3. is a transverse section of the complete device taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. and, Fig. 4. an enlarged detail of one corner of the same.
Like numerals refer to the figures. 1 represents mensions and rovided witha back 2 secured therein, the rame and back-constituting substantially a shallow tray, within which and secured to the back, are a series of coiled springs 3 to yieldingly su panel15 preferably a pane made of several plies of Veneer, upon the surface of which panel is placed a thin layer of yielding material 6, preferably of a fabric known as eider down; Over the outer surface of this material is terial 7, prefera ly of rubber coated cloth, the edges of which extend beyond the panel on all sides and are secured to the edge of the frame 1 by means of any convenient fastcnings 8, preferably tacks or small nails. This like parts in all of to such machines as a frame of any preferred di-.
port a movable placed a sheet of flexible masheet 7 serves to hold the elastic material- 7 in place and provides a smooth surface to contact :the paper. The margins of the sheet will yield as the panel is pressed inward and also serve to form a tight closure be tween the panel and frame. The springs 3 yieldingly support the panel to uniformly engage the paper over its entire surface and press the same closely down upon the negative. To guide this panel 6 when pressed within the tray, and to limit its outward movement as well, I provide a pair of inter locking hooks 4 near the respective corners of the tray, which hooks are respectively inserted ill the back 2 and panel 5 and engage each other to liinit the outward movement of the panel and when the panel moves inward,
these books slide on each other and guide the panel, said hooks being arranged in pairs near the res cctive corners ,of the tray and with the hoolis in the panel slidably engaging the sides of the respective hooks in the tray toward the center of the tray whereby the panel is guided to move vertically.
hat I claim is:
1. The combination of a tray consisting of a frame and a back secured therein, springs attached to the back, a panel yieldingly supported by the springs, and a sheet of yielding material extendin over the surface of the anal and having exible margins extending cm. the panel and secured to the frame of the tray.
2. The combination of a back, a marginal frame attached. thereto, springs attached to the back, a panel yieldin ly supported by the springs, elastic materia supported by the panel, and a sheet of'fiexible material thereon, said sheet also having flexible margins extending from the panel'and secured to the frame. i
3. Thecombination of a tray consisting of a frame and a back secured therein, springs in the tray, a panel engaged and supported by the springs, and interlocking hooks slidably engaging each other and connoctingthe back and panel, said hooks being arranged in opposing pairs near the res )ectwe corners of the device and with thehoolis in the panel slidably engaging the sides of the respective hooks in the tray toward the center of the tra The combination of a frame, a back in loo the frame, ,spflfiQS zs iformlied t0- the back, a $111111; and sflso attaiched at its margin to the rame. 1
