Description

J. & W. Hi BUTTERWORTH.
Grain Fan. i
Patented April 13,1869.

N. PETERS, Phukoiiihogmpher, Washington. D. C.
JOHN BUTTERWORTH AND WILLIAM H. BUTTERWORTH, OF T REN-I' TON, NEW JERSEY.
Letters Patent No. 88,843, dated April 13, 1 869.
MROVEMENT IN GRAIN-FAN BLAST.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and maldng part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOHN Bu'r'rnawon'rrr and WILLIAM H. BUTTERWORTH, of Trenton, in the county of Mercer, and in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain- Separators; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in the constrnction of a device for regulating the blasts of fans for graineseparators.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains, to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and which represent a side view in section.
A represents the fan-box, and B, the fan, which are made in any of the known and usual Ways.
Near to the throat O of the fan-box we make a door, D, and hang it on hinges.
On the inside of the door, and at the top of the same, is fixed an arm, E, which extends beyond and above the door.
Near the end of this arm are one or more holes to receive a rod, or wire, F, the other end' of which is connected to a thin strip of wood, G.
This strip extends the width of the fan-box, and has, an arm, H, fastened to each end, extending upwards a suitable distance, and is pivoted to the sides of the fan-box. This we denominate a \vinddndicator.
On the outside of the door is also fixed an arm, I, with a movable weight, J. v We make the arm E, on the inside of the door, of such a relative length to the width of thedoor, that a very slight movement of the indicator will open the. door, according'to any increased pressure of the blast, thus, in combination with the weight on the outside of the door, completely regulating the amount of wind discharged upon the grain.
The advantages of this device are obvious, and w wiii only mention a few of its peculiar points.
The arm on the inside of the door being of such 'a length beyond the hinges of the door, and so connected with the wind-indicator, that by a very slight move ment of the same, in combination with the movable weight on the arm outside of the door, the increased pressure of wind, by any irregularity of the speed of the fan, is completely governed by the opening of the door.
Another point of importance is, the placing the door so near to the throat of the fan-box that it is impossible for any accumulation of wind to-be created between the door and the discharge of wind from the fan-box, thus insuring, at all times, an' equal amount of wind discharged upon the grain, whatever may be theirregularity of the speed of the fan.
Having thus fully described our invention,
That we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Providing the fan-box of a grain-separator, near its throat, with a hinged door, connected with a windindicator, for the purpose of regulating the blast of the fan, substantially as herein set forth.
2. In combination with the fan-box A, the hinged door D, inside arm E, rod F, wind-indicator G H, outside arm I, and movable weight J, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. 7
In testimony that We claim the foregoing, we have hereunto set our hands, this 30th day of January, 1869.
