UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST MANTENFEL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED PICTURE AND STOVEPIPE HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST MANTENFEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at 228 est Melrose street, in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Picture and Stovepipe Holder, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention consists in certain new and useful improvements in hangers for supporting pictures, stove-pipes or other articles suspended from walls and ceilings.
The object of the invention is to provide a hanger that can be conveniently attached to a picture molding, or hook, that can be readily attached to the picture or other object to be supported, and that can be conveniently adjusted to the length desired.
WVith these objects in view and further objects which will appear as the nature of my invention is more fully disclosed, I have invented the novel hanger illustrated in the annexed drawings which show one embodi ment of the invention, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved hanger as used for supporting pictures. Fig. 2 is a front view of Fig. 1. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are top, front and side views respectively of my automatic clamping device which secures the hanger at the desired length. Fig. 6 is a front view of my hanger as used for supporting a stove-pipe. Fig. 7 is a side view of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a front view of the self-locking clamp that I use for securing a band around the stove-pipe. Fig. 9 is a cross section of AB, Fig. 8.
Similar reference characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views.
1 is the main shank of the hanger terminating at its upper end in the hook 2 adapted to Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 22, 1907.

Serial No. 375,051.
clamping device 3 is formed of a base late 1 1 which has upper and lower perforate( lugs 12 and 13 through which the extension bar 4 is guided, and of the dogs 14 pivotally disposed on opposite sides thereof. The dogs 14 have sharpened points 15 normally held in contact ,-with the sides of the extension bar 4 by engage a wall molding or other support, and
carrying at its lower end the automatic clamping device 3.
4 is an extension bar passing through the clamping device which looks it at any desired position and is formed into the hook 6 at its lower end and the lug or shoulder 5 at its upper end to prevent disengagement from the clamping device when being adjusted at its extreme position.
7-7 are rods having eyes or rings 8 at one end adapted to engagethe hook 6 and having hooks 9 at the other end for attachment to the screw eyes commonly found on the backs of picture frames. The automatic l l l l a perforated lug 17.
means of the spring 16 stretched between the The dogs 14 are each provided at the lower end with holes for a string or chain 18 which is attached in the form of the letter Y so that by pulling downward on its lower portion the lower end of the dogs will be brought towards each other and the points become disengaged from the extension bar.
From the foregoing description by refer ence to the drawing it will be clear that the extension bar 4 can be pushed upward the desired height where it will become locked by the contact of the points 15 actuated by the spring 16. It will also be clear that on pulling the spring 18 or pressing the lower ends of the dogs between the thumb and finger, the extension bar will be released and can be lowered freely as may be desired.
In Figs. 6 and 7 the main shank, automatic clamping device and the extension bar are identical with Figs. 1 and 2. The hanger being here adapted to support a stove-pipe, however, the rods 7 are not used, but in their stead is a band 20 which is looped around the stove-pipe 21 and suspended from the hook 6 of the extension bar 4 by means of the clamp 22 which also secures the band in a loop of suitable circumference for the pipe. The clamp 22 is formed of a plate 22 having an upper perforation 23 for the hook 6 and a lower elongated hole 24 for the band 20 one end of which is bent around the portion of the plate between its lower edge and the hole 24 as shown at 25 in Fig. 7. The other end of the band is brought around the pipe and through the hole 24 over the bent portion of its opposite end, where it is secured by the dog 26 pivotally connected to the plate of the clamp by holes through the lugs 27 and corresponding lugs on the dog. The sharpened point 24'" of the dog is kept normally pressed against the band 20 in the hole 24 by means of the spring 28 except when released by pressure of the thumb and finger against the upper portion of the dog. The plate 22 of the clamp is provided also with perforated projections 29 to give a convenient mode of attachment for other purposes.
Having now fully described one of the embodiments of my invention and having it distinctly understood that I do not waive my right to any other form in which it may be embodied, what I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a main shank with an extension bar slidably connected therewith, a pair of dogs for securing the extension bar at any I point in its length to the main shank, means main shank, in combination with an extension bar slidably mounted thereon, a pair of dogs pivoted to the lower end of said shank, a spring normally holding said dogs in engagement with said extension bar, means operable to disengage said dogs from said bar and means for attaching said bar to the article to be supported, substantially as described.
4. In an apparatus of the class described,
the combination of a main shank, having a hooked upper portion and a clamping device at its lower end, an extension bar hooked at its lower end and adapted to slide through said clamping device longitudinally to said shank, pivoted dogs oppositely disposed in said clamping device on either side of said extension bar, a spring for holding the points of said dogs in contact with the slidable extension bar, a Y shaped string or chain attached to said pivoted dogs oppositely to their points whereby their points may be drawn apart to release said extension bar, and means for attaching said extension bar to the article to be supported.
5. In a device of the class described, a main shank, in'combination with a plate secured to the lower end of said shank, lugs on said plate, an extension bar, slidably mounted in said lugs, means on said plate normally engaging said extension bar to hold the same against longitudinal movement and means for releasing said bar, substantially as described.
6. In a device of the class described, a main shank, in combination with a plate secured to the lower end of said shank, a pair of perforated lugs on said plate, an extension bar mounted for longitudinal movement through said lugs, a pair of dogs pivotally mounted on said plate, a spring normally holding said dogs in engagement with said bar and means for retracting said dogs, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of the two subscribing witnesses.
