zfl'zzeas 6's Eva/2Z0? i jaiizldz Coil/ means or a s iral spring 1' through an adjusting screw 5, and consequently, since it is held by friction, it takes part in. the movements of the carriage j.
The hooks o, 0 are hoth secured to a lever w which, by iineans of a slide it, can be oscillatedv by the cam a on the shaft (1, in order to insert the hooks 0, 0 into the eyes of the needles, the lever to being provided with a slot in the resent instance to receive a pin 4; on the sli e a, whereby reciprocation of the latter serves to automatically move the thread engaging hooks to and from operative position. in order to enable the two hooks to enter at the same time into the eyes of the needles, for the purpose of engaging the ends of the gathering or shirring thread, either the upper book i) is suitably bent (Figs. 2.
and 3)or the eyes of the needles are made sufficiently large to enable the two hooks to pass through the eye of the front needle (Fig. 4 y
The separate p arts 2, 2 of the middle 1nemher of the folding device operate with the actuating levers of the outer folding jaws 'm, m in the manner herein described so that,
during the inward motion of these jaws of the outer folding member, the jaws z, z of the inner folding members are sunultanc-- 'ously moved outwards in opposite directions,
so that the relatively displaced teeth of the outer crimping or folding jaws enter the spaces and fold the material .(shown dotted in Figs. 6 and '7 By this means, the pins 8 (see Figs. 5 and 6) on the parts 2, 2 at the same time serve to support the tubular fabric when applied. over the inner jaws. if desired, the parts 2, 2 can be fixed in their drawn out positions (Fig. 7), so that only the outer crimping or folding jaws m, to require to be moved, the parts 2, z in this in stance bcing\supported rigidly in staggered or zigzag r lation corresponding to the position occupied during the crimping or folding operation by these parts or inner jaws when movable.
1. An apparatus for crimping or folding the ends of tubular textile fabric and for drawing a gathering or shirring thread into the crimped or folded part of said fabric, said machine emnprising means for supporting and crimping said fabric, needles, a movable carriage for said needles, means for moving said carriage, thread-carryiug hooks adapted to en tor the eyes of said needles, a single carriage bearing both of said hooks and means for moving said carriage transversely to said needles.
2. An apparatus for crimping or folding the ends of tubular tcxlilc fabric and for drawing a gathering or shirriug thread into the crimpcd or folded part of said fabric, said machine comprising means for supporting and crimping said fabric, needles, a movable carriage for sald needles, means for moving said carriage, thread-carrying hooks adapted to enter the eyes of said needles, a lever hearing both of said hooks, and means for oscillating said lever so as to move said hooks into and out of the eyes of said needles, substantially as described.
