Description

l BENJAMIN F. MA SITE RS, OF MIDDLEPORT, ILLINOIS LettersPazen: No. 88,794, dated April 13, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettex-s Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. MASTERS, of Middleport, in the county of Iroquois, and State of' Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference heilig had tothe accompanying drawings, making a 'part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a peculiar combination and arrangement of parts iu a plow, by means of which the sod or surface-soil may be cut or shaved from the subsoil, leaving the soil otherwise undisturbed, so that the subsoil, when turned by the plow, will be separated from the sod.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the drawings- M represents atriangular concavo-eonvex mould-cutter, made of steel, with a slot in the centre for attaching it to the coulter C and brace B.
O is a coulter, the upper end of which is attached to the beam by a clamp, 71, the lower end, E, forming a right angle, said angular portion being-toward the front end of the beam.
B is a brace, the upper end of which is attached to the beam by a clamp, h', the lower end pointing toward the lower end of the coulter.
The lower end of the brace B, and the'augular portion of the coulter, have notches cut in them corresponding with the thickness of the cutter` M Said lower ends are passed through the slot in the cutter M, until the ends of the slot engage with the notches, in which position the parts are secured by inserting a key or Wedge, W, between the brace B and coulter C.
, The height of the cutter may be regulated by unserewing the nuts n the clamps h h', raising or lowering the coulter C and brace B, as may be desired, and again screwing up the nuts, so as to hold the brace and coulter securely to the beam.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desireto secure by Let ters Patent, is-
The arrangement and combination of the cutter M,-
key W, coulter O, brace B, and clamps h It', substantially as shown and described.
C. F. MCNEILL, HENRY .l. Simens.
