RAIL-CHAZR.
Application filed September 6, 1906. Serial No. 333, l94.
and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact descri )tion ofthe invention, such as will enable 0t ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to chairs for railroad rails, and more particularly to chairs including clamping devices which hold the rail securely upon the chair and without the necessity of the direct engagement of spikes with the rails.
The invention to this end resides in the provision of a chair and rail clamping 'ates which are slidable into position upon the chair to engage the rail, and which are held thereon by means oi spikes which driven through the plate, the rail engaging plates, and int o the tie.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a top plan view of a section of track showing my chairs in use. Fig. 2 is a similar view oi one of the chairs. Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of one of the chairs, the rail therefor being shown in section. Fig. 4 is a detail vertical longitudinal sectional view through one of the chairs and a rail supp'ort ed thereby, and Fig. 5 is a detail transverse sectional view on the line 5--5 of Fig. 4, the rail being omitted.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, the numeral 6 denotes a railway tie, and 7 a rail, which is supported u on the tie by means of one of my chairs w ich will now be described.
, Each chair comprises a chair plate 8, which is flanged, as at 9, at its middle and along its longitudinaledges and is provided at its said edges and upon opposite sides of the flanges 9 with upstanding flai'iges it), which are disrec ted inwardly tovmrd each other, as shown in Fig. The rail 7 is disposed upon that portion. of the chair plate which is deter mined by the flanges 9 and between the flanges 1 'lhe opposing end edges of the 7 Patented May 12, 1908.
said flanges at eachside of the plate are inclined. toward each other, indicated by the numeral 1 and thedistance between the end edges of the flanges at each side of the plate at the point of junction with the plate, is greater than the greatest Width of the base of the rail 7, to permit ready engagement of the'rails with the chairs.
- Rail-clamping plates 12 and 13 have their longitudinal edges beveled, as at 14-, to permit them to he slid into position upon the chair plate 8 between the corresponding flanges 10 at each side of the said chair plate and inwardly and outwardly respectively of the rails with which they are engaged, and upon each plate 12 and 13 at its inner end is formed an upstanding rail-engaging boss '15, the boss upon the plate 12 being of less height than the boss upon the plate 13, to permit passage of the car wheel flanges. 'lhe rail-engaging faces of the bosses 15 conform to the contour of 'the rail, as will be readily understood, and registering apertures 16 are formed in the chair late 8. and the railclampiilg plates 12 and 13 for the passage of spikes 17, which are driven into the tile 6 and serve to hold the plates 12 and 13 in engagement with the rails and against displacement from the plate 8.
What is claimed, is- A device of the class described comprising a chair plate formed with a broadened railsupporting intermediate portion and at its longitudinal edges and at each side of the said portion with upstanding opposed flanges, railengaging plates seated upon the chair plate and removably received at their edges between the flanges, said plates being formed each with an upstanding rail-engaging boss Which is engaged at its sides by the opposed edges of the corresponding flanges upon the chair plate, and fastening devices for securing; the rail-engaging plate upon the chair plate substantially as described. 4
in testimony whereof, I afl'lx my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
