UNITED era-res PATENT CFFKDE JOHN H. MARSH AND JOSEPH J. LANZIT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNORS TO BORDENS CONDENSED MILK COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
CARTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 12, 1908.
To all whom ttmay concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN H. MARSH and Josnrn J. LANZIT,- citizens of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartons, of which the following is a vice 'wheo still further wrapped; Fig. 5
shows the device completely closed; and Fig. 6 is a section in the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Referrin to the drawings, it will be seen that the blank has a long rectangular central portiondivided by score marks into sections, A, A, A, A and, A, the section, A,
referably having its corners cut oil an avin at its free end a small lockin flap, A. 11 forming our im roved box a out a solid body, as is ordinar y done, the body is laid do the section, A, the section, A, being brought up on one side of it, the section, A, lying above it, and the locking fia A turned down as illustrated in ig. 2. The body is then rolled over from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig; 3, so as to bring the section, A, on top This lays the section, A, underneath the package, and outside the locking flap, A and thereupon the section, A, is swung up into a vertical position outside the section, A. When the parts are in this position, it will be seen that 1 the section, A, is absolutely locked against outward movement with respect to the package, and that it is only b first moving out the sections, A, A, that t c section, A, can be swung away. These sections are in practice locked by the end flaps of the package, so as to make any such movement of the sections, A, A, impossible, and, as a result, the structure is firmly held in osition without the use of glue. The endv a s referred to consist of two inner flaps, on each end of the package, and a single outer .tongue B flap, B, on each end of the package, each of the flaps, B, having a short bent end, or In practice, the inner flaps are swung in from opposite sides of each end and are, consequently, placed on alternate sections of the blank, so that when the box is folded up, they will lie opposite each other. The outer flaps swing over the inner flaps at right angles thereto, and the bent ends of the outer flaps swing in over the edges of the inner flaps, locking them in position. In order to get the best looking effect, we prefer to have the inner flaps on the sections, A, A of the blank and to have the outer flaps so arranged that when the box iscompleted, one outer flap shall hinge on one edge of the box and the other on the diagonal opposite edge.
It will be seen that when the end flaps are swung in as illustrated in Fig. 4, the sections, A, and A, which operate to hold in the sections, A, and A of the blank are firmly locked down to the package by engagement of the end flaps, the outer flaps at each end embracing the inner flaps on the section, A, and thus reventing, movement thereof. This type oi box can be assembled with ex trerne rapidity and is especially desirable, and is, in fact, particularly desi ned, for use in wrapping butter, cheese, and the like. When use for this pur ose, the pasteboard will referably be para ed on the inside.
e realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of this construction, and hence do not limit ourselves to the specific form herein shown and described.
We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a pasteboard box assembled without the use of adhesive and held in position solel by the interlocking of its parts, the com ination with five side-sections arran ed in a series, and a locking section at the en of the series and attached integrally to the exflaps being ap roximately one-half the combined len th 0 the first-named end-flaps and tongues, or the 'urpose set forth.
2. In a pasteboard box assembled Without the use of adhesive and held in position solely by the interlocking of its parts, the combination with five side-sections arran ed in a series, and a lookin -section at the on of the series and attache integrally to the extreme edge thereof, the sections being'bent to inclose a space rectan ular in cross-section, the fifth section lying lnside the first section and the lockin -section lying inside the second section of t 1e series, of an end-flap at one end of the second section and a corres 0nding end-flap at the op osite end of the ourth section, each of said end-flaps being. provided With a tongue, and an end-section at each end of both the first and third side-sections, each of the last-named end-flaps being approximately one-half the combined length of the first-named fla s and tongues, each end-flap being integra with a side-section and each tongue being inte ral With an endfla for the purpose set fort n Witness whereof We have signed the above application for Letters Patent, at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, this 5th day of September, A. D. 1905.
