Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 15, 1906, Serial No. 334,759. Renewed October 2, 1907. Serial No. 395,522.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, N ICKLAS H. BLOOM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashua, in the county of Chickasaw and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Riding Attachment for Agricultural Implements, of which the following is a specification.
One of the principal objects of the present invention is to provide a strong, durable frame that may be readily attached to a harrow or other implement, will properly follow the same, and will afiord a comfortable vehicle on which the driver can ride.
Another object is to provide, in connection with a seat supporting frame, pivoted to the usual reach, novel and effective means for locking the frame against free pivotal action during the movement of the harrow in a straight line, said meansbeing readily movable to an inoperative position to permit the necessary turns being made.
The preferred form of construction is illustrated in the accompanying drawings,where- 111 Figure 1 is a top plan view of the attachment, showing the same applied to a harrow. In the embodiment illustrated, a reach member is employed, comprising convergently disposed bars 5 arran ed to be connected at their front ends, an as shown at 6, to the evener bar 7 of a harrow 8. Their rear ends are disposed in overlapping relation, and are connected by the u per end of a depending pivot bolt 9. The fower end of said pivot bolt is connected to the intermediate portion of the reach bar by braces 10.
A seat supporting member or frame 11 is employed, and is constructed as follows. An axle 12 has journal'ed upon its ends the usual ground wheels 13, and this axle sup orts an arch bar 14 having offset ends 15 thereover. Bearing blocks 16 are interposed between the axle and the ends 15 of the arch isposed bar, said bearing blocks having sockets 17 in their under side that receive the axle and having grooves 18 to receive bolts 19 passing through the ends 15 of the arch bar on o posite sides of the axle. The lower en s of these bolts engage the rear ends 20 of braces 21 arranged beneath the axle and bearing blocks, the front ends'of the braces being engaged with the lower end of the pivot bolt 9. A tongue bar 22 has its rear end secured as shown at 23 to the upper portion of the arch bar, said tongue extending longitudinally of the frame and reach, and-projecting in advance of the pivot, the pivot passing through an intermediate portion thereof. The front end of the tongue 22 is disposed beneath a cross bar 24 secured to the reach bars 5, and projecting beyond the outer sides thereof to form a foot rest. A latch 25 is pivoted between its ends, as shown at 26 to the cross bar, one-arm of the latch having a socket 27 that receives the front end of the tongue, the other arm of said latch being offset, as shown at 28 so that it extends above the plane of the adjacent end of the cross bar. A seat 29 has a standard 30 secured, as shown at 31 to the tongue 22 between the arch bar and pivot. A spacing sleeve 32 is located on the pivot 9 between the braces andthe tongue. The bearing blocks 16 are provided at their outer ends with hoods 33 that extend over the inner ends of the hubs of the wheels, and constitute guards to prevent the ingress of sand and dirt to the bearings of said wheels.
The operation of the machine will be readily understood to those skilled in the art. As long as the harrow is moving in a strai ht line, the tongue will be disposed centra lly between the reach bars 5 and will be locked by the latch 25 so that a substantially rigid frame is provided. In making the turns, however, the driver has only to press down upon the arm of the latch, thereby disconnecting the said latch from the tongue and permitting the reach to swing with respect to the wheel supporting frame or member 11.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the. construction, operation, and many advan tages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction, may be resorted to Without departing from the s irit or sacrificing any of the advantages o the invention.

In a riding attachment of the class described, the combination with a wheeled frame comprising an axle, an arch bar located over the axle, braces arranged beneath the axle, common fasteners for securing the braces and arch bar to the axle, of means for connecting the frame to an agricultural implement and a seat mounted on the frame.
3. In a riding attachment of the class described, the combination with a frame comprising an axle, an arch bar located over the axle, bearing blocks interposed between the ends of the arch bar and the axle, braces arranged beneath the axle, bolts engaging the ends of the arch bar and braces and embracing the bearing blocks, of means for connecting the frame to an agricultural implement and a seat mounted on the frame.
4. In a riding attachment of the class de scribed, the combination with a reach, of an axle, an arch bar mounted on the axle, braces having their rear ends connected to the axle, other braces having their front ends connected to the reach, a seat, a seat support engaged with the arch bar, and a pivot connecting the reach, the seat support and the braces. a
5. In a riding attachment of the class described, the combination with convergently disposed reach bars, of an axle, an arch bar mounted on the axle, a pivot bolt depending from the rear convergent ends of the reach bars, a tongue connected to the pivot bolt and to the arch bar, a seat support on the 'tongue, braces connected at their rear ends to the axle and at their front ends to the lower end of the pivot bolt, and other braces connected at their front ends to the reach bars and at their rear ends to the pivot bolt,
6. In a riding attachment of the class described, the combination with a reach member, of a seat supporting member pivoted thereto, a tongue bar disposed longitudinally of the members and carried by one of the same, and locking means engaging the tongue bar and the other member for holding the members against free relative movement.
7. In a riding attachment of the class described, the combination with a reach member, of a seat supporting member pivoted thereto, a tongue bar disposed longitudinally of the members and carried by the seat supporting member, and a latch mounted on the reach member and detachably engaging the tongue bar for holding the members against free relative movement.
8. In a riding attachment of the class described, the combination with a reach member, of a seat supporting member, a pivot connecting the members, a tongue carried by one member and engaging the pivot, and a locking device for detachably securing the tongue to the other member for holding the members against free relative movement.
9. In a. riding attachment of the class described, the combination with a reach, of a seat supporting frame, a pivot connecting the frame and reach, said seat supporting frame including a tongue engaged with the pivot, and a latch mounted on the reach and detachably engaging the tongue for normally holding it and thereby the frame against free swinging movement with respect to the reach.
10. In a riding attachment of the class described, the combination with a'reach member, of a frame member pivoted thereto, a tongue forming a part of the frame member, a seat mounted on the tongue, and means for detachably locking the tongue to the reach to prevent the free swinging movement of the frame with respect thereto.
11. In a riding attachment of the class described, the combination with a reach, of a supporting frame, a pivot connecting the frame and reach, said frame including a tongue that engages the pivot and extends in advance thereof, and a swinging latch mounted on the reach and engaging the projecting end of the tongue for preventing the swinging movement of the frame with respect to the latch,
12. In a riding attachment of the class described, the combination with a reach, of a wheeled frame, a pivot connecting the frame and reach, said reach including a tongue engaging the pivot and extending in advance thereof, a seat mounted on the tongue, and a latch carried by the reach and engaging the projecting end of the tongue.
13. In a riding attachment of the class described, the combination with convergently disposed reach bars, of a pivot located at their convergent rear ends, a cross bar connecting the reach bars in advance of their rear ends, an axle, an arch bar mounted on the axle, a tongue connected to the arch bar,
said tongue engaging the pivot and projecting beneath the cross bar, a latch pivoted on the cross bar and engaging the tongue, braces between the axle, the reach bars, and the pivot, and a seat mounted on the tongue.
14. In a riding attachment of the class described, the combination with reach bars,of a pivot depending below the reach bars, an axle, braces connecting the reach bars and 10 having sand hoods lower end of the pivot, braces connecting the axle and the lower end of the pivot,atongne engaged with the pivot, and a seat mounted on the tongue. 15. In a riding attachment of the class described, the combination With an axle, of Wheels mounted thereon, an arch bar arranged over the axle, bearing blocks interposed between the arch bar and axle and disposed over the hubs of the Wheels, and means for connecting the attachment to an agricultural implement.
