PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 12, 1908.
Application filed February 1731906. Serial 110. 301,669.
To all whom it may cncern:
Be it known that I, J ORGEN H. SYLVESTER- SEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dundee, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Plow, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plows; and the object of the invention is to present a special plow adapted for the purpose of turning back into ditches, such as tile ditches, the furrow slice or material excavated in the process of making the ditch and deposited at one side thereof; the said plow being intended. particularly to be used subsequently to, and as an accessory to, a ditching machine, an example of which may be found in Letters Patent of the United States #774,458, granted to myself on the eighth day of November, 1904, although, of course, the plow of the present invention may be utilized entirely independently of this or any other ditching machine.
The invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention; it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be made, when desired.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plow constructed in accordance with the principles of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a dptail perspective view of a portion of the p ow.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are indicated throughout by similar characters of reference.
The share 1 and the landside 2 of the improved plow converge at the point 3. The moldboard M is composed of a plurality of spaced bars 4, 4 connected with or formed integral with the landside and curved upwardly and outwardly on the lines of an ordinary moldboard, so as to be capable of turning a furrow slice in the usual manner the bars 4, 4 are sustained in proper position by means of braces, as 5 and 6, said bars 4, 4
being connected with and spaced from the braces 5 and 6, as by means of studs 7.
The rear end of the landside is formed with an upwardly extending inverted U-shaped arch 8 the links of which are spaced apart; said arch being provided at its upper end a bracket 9 which is suitably connected with the beam 10, near the rear end of the latter. A standard 11 extends upwardly from the landside and is likewise connected with the beam. Handles 12 and 13 are provided, the former of said handles being connected directly with the beam, while the latter is connected with a brace 14 extending forwardly to the standard 11, and said handles being connected with each other by means of a rung 15; an inclined brace 16 connects the standard 11 with the beam; and auxiliary braces, as 17, may be employed wherever their presence may seem necessary or desirable.
Connected with the lower end of the rear arm 18 of the landside arch 8, as by means of a bolt or pivot 19, is a cutting member 20, the point of which extends forwardly between the front and rear legs or members of the arch 8, while the lower or cutting edge of said cutting member extends beneath the lower edge of the landside, as will be clearly seen in Fig. 2 of the drawings; braces, as 21, are employed to retain the cutting member in operative position. The bolt 19 is provided at its inner end with an ordinary screw tap (not shown). By loosening the said tap, the cutting member 20 may be pitched at a desired angle with relation to the rear arm 1.8 of the arch 8 and, when in such position, the said tap is tightened when the said cutting member is pivotally fixed in such position with relation to the said arch arm.
A draft rod 22 is provided, said rod being bifurcated at its rear end so as to straddle the standard 11 the fork 23 of the draft rod carries a roller 24 riding upon and engaging the rear edge of the standard. Pivotally connected with the draft rod 22 near the front end of the latter is a link 25 which extends through a keeper 26 upon the beam 10, near the front end of the latter, said link being adjustable in the keeper, as by means of a bolt 27; the front end of the rod 22 is provided with a hook 28 for the attachment of the draft. By this construction the draft will be exerted at a point intermediate the beam and the landside, and excessive strain upon the juncture of the beam and the arch 8 will thus be avoided.
As hereinbefore stated, this improved plow is specially devised for the purpose of turning.
a furrow slice, or excavated material, back into a ditch, such as a tile ditch, from which it has been excavated. In order to perform this operation successfully, it is obviously necessary that the lay or landside be prevented from swaying laterally under the impulse of the pressure of material upon the moldboard; such lateral movement is in this case prevented by the cutting member 20 which cuts into and. engages the surface of the soil in rearof the landside and in alinement with the latter. The arch which separates the point of the cutter from the landside proper permits weeds, grass, roots, and other obstructions to work out gradually, instead of accumulating in front of the cutter and thus interfering with the operation of the device. The draft may be conveniently regulated by the herein described arrangement of the draft rod, which permits the nose or point, of the plow to be'tilted to the proper inclination to cause the plow to penetrate to the desired depth.
The general construction of the improved plow is simple and inexpensive, and it has been found to be thoroughly efficient in operation.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A plow having a landside, and a cutting member supported in rear of and spaced .from the lam side with its cutting edge below the lower edge of the landside.
2. In a plow, a landside having a terminal rear arch, and a cutting member connected pivotally with the rear leg of said arch.
3. A plow having a landside, an arch located at the rear terminal of said landside, a cutting member connected to the rear leg of said arch and having'its forward end located in advance of the rear leg and in the rear of the front leg of the arch.
4'. A plow having a landside, an arch located at the rear terminal of said landside, a cutting member connected to the rear leg of said arch and having its forward end located in advance of the rear leg and in the rear of the front leg of the arch andits loweredge located below the lower edge of the landside.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JORGEN II. SYLVESTERSEN.
