Be it known that I, ALBERT J NYsrRoM, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of W'heatomin the county of Dupage and State of Illinois, -have invented a new and useful Improvement in Map-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for housing and preserving maps or charts, and by which they may be readily displayed when desired.
The object of my invention is to provide a casing within which, by appropriate means, a large number of maps may be conveniently mounted and so arranged that any desired map may be instantly drawn down and displayed 5 by which, in suoli case,it will be automatically held in position as long as desired, and when no longer wanted for use it may be rolled up and another displayed in vlike manner if desired. Means is also provided by which any map or maps may be readily removed from the case for use independent thereof, each map being provided with individual spring roller mounting and hangers ready for use, and the whole, while economical of construction, presents a neat and ornamental appearance. The principles of my invention are illustrated in the drawings, in which* Figure 1 is a front view of my device, the casing being partly removed Fig. 2 represents an end view of the map cylinder looked at from the right; Fig. 3 represents a similar view in section of the other end of the map roller on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1 Fig. 4 is a fractional portion of the end disk shown in Fig. 2, having the retaining lever shifted to disclose the map holding slot. Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective view of one end of a map and its holding frame as prepared for insertion in the device.
Further describing my invention with reference to the drawings, in which like characters of reference. denote like parts throughout: 1 shows a frame work or casing within which the operative parts of my device are nounted to protect them from dust and the li re.

Fivoted at 3 are retaining levers 4 each provided with the notch 5. The pivotal attachment is such thatthe retaining lever will swing over the radial slot 2 and close the Specification of Letters Patent.

be held in its thus described normal position by spring pressure, a means for which is shown in the leaf spring 7, secured to the lever at 8 by suitable notch therein. The other end of said spring bears upon a lug 9 which may be struck out from the material of the disk 2.
A depression or cup 1() may be pressed outwardly from the disk 2 to form a sort of hub within which may be seated the axial shaft 11.` A disk 12 similar to 2 at the other end of the device is also provided with a similar hub into which the said shaft is seated and in which, as in 10, it is securely attached by pins or screws 13. The said last named disk is also provided with circular openings 15 and a series of lugs 16K should be formed on the inner or facing side thereof, preferably .by punching vthem from the body of the disk and turning them up at right angles to the inner face thereof. Such projection or lugs should be equal in number to the openings 15 and equally spaced between them. The entire frame work mounted on the central shaft 11 is j ournaled in the casing 1.
The several maps which are to be mounted in my device that illustrated being adapted to take eight, should be mounted on suitable spring actuated rollers 18. Such rollers may be of the kind commonly used for window shades or maps, having a cylinder on which the map is rolled, and a spring contained therein having one end attached to the cylinder and the other to an axis journaled therein. rlhe fixed axis of said roller may be mounted on the clip 19, provided with a slot 20. Said clip, as shown in Fig. 5, is secured to the end of a bar 21. A similar clip at the other end should also be supplied with a lug similar to that shown at 22. The bar and clips provide a supporting frame for each map and the whole structure should be so fixed Athat it will rest upon the central shaft 11. The lugs 16 provide means by which the rollers and frames are equally'spaced about the map cylinder and held in rigid relation thereto. In placing one of the maps in my apparatus the lug 22 is inserted in one of the openings 15 so that the supporting frame will rest on the central shaft 11 and contact with those portions of the lugs l-which face each' other. The corresponding retaining lever at the other end.is then moved to the position shown in Fig. 4, whereby the other lug 22 at the other end of the map support may be carried through the radial groove Y2 tothe bottom thereof, whereby when said retaining lever is released'it will be forced over by the spring 7 and, engaging the lug 22 within the notch 5, will securelyfretain and lock the map in position.
For convenience and readyJchanges each map should be providedy with itsown frame work similar to that shown in Fig. When it is desired toplace such map in the apparatus or take one therefrom, for replacement the changes can readily and quickly be made as last above described.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent'the following:

In combination with a map holder having a casing map carrying frames, lugs on each end of the map carrying frames, a revoluble cylinder journaled in said casing and comprising a shaft, a disk at one end of the shaft rovided with apertures to receive the' lugs o one end of said frames, a disk at the other end of the shaft provided with radial slots and levers corresponding to each of said slots pivoted to said disk so that their ends project therebeyond, and having notches through which the frame lugs on. the opposite end of said frames are passed to be en 'aged by said levers, and lugs carried by the first-mentioned disk to engage said frames'at opposite sides thereof.
2. A map holder provided with map suporting frames, and projecting lugs carried by the ends of said frames, a disk having radial slots to receive the lugs on one end of the frames, and levers projecting beyond the disk on one edge of the slot, la retaining armV pivoted to the disk, and. means for normally holding said lever in engagement with said sto 4i.) In a map holder, the combination of a ma cylinder therefor provided with an end dis rhaving equidistant inwardly facing lugs integrally formed thereon, of map frames and means for mutual engagement between the frames and the disk, each of said frames being adapted to be engaged by the lugs on each side thereof.

In a map holder, the combination of a ma cylinder thereof having a central shaft anc an end disk on said-shaft having equidistant inwardly facing lugs integrally formed thereon, of map frames, and means for mutual engagement between the frames and the disk, each of said frames being adapted to be engaged by the lugs on each side thereof, and to rest on said central shaft.
