To all whom it may concern:

Be. it known that 1, MAX WENsAUER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sheboygan, in the county of Sheboygan and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Bed, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to beds and its object is to provide a device of this character having a movable bed bottom rovided with means whereby it may be readily moved into raised or lowered position.

Another object is to provide means whereby the bed bottom can be supported in a raised position.

ith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.v

In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred form of the invention.

In said drawings: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through, the device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion thereof, a part of the bed bottom being broken away. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through a modified form of bed.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates a bed which may be of any preferred construction, either of wood or metal, and the same is provided with a bed bottom 2 consisting preferably of a rectangular frame provided with one or more cross braces 3. Connected to one end of the frame is a pair of hinged leaves 4 which are fastened to the headboard of the bed as indicated in Fig. 1. The points of connection between these leaves and the headboard are preferably disposed above the horizontal plane normally occupied by the bed bottom. A shaft 5 extends transversely beneath the bed and is journaled in suitable hangers 6 extending downward from the sides of the bed. Eyes 7 are fastened to the bottom of the frame 2 and pivotally connected to them are the ends of a bowed loop 8 preferably formed of a heavy metal rod. The intermediate or crown portion 9 of this loop has a cable, chain or other flexible device fastened to it, said device being also secured to the adjoining portion of shaft 5. The side portions of the loop are crooked close to the crown portion 9 as indicated at 11 so that when the chain or cable 10 is wound upon the shaft 5 these crooked portions will be drawn onto the shaft and will constitute stops or abutments for holding the loop 8 and the bed bottom in elevated positions.

In order that the shaft 5 may be conveniently reached the same is provided with a neck or trunnion 12 projecting beyond one side of the bed and designed to be engaged by a removable crank 13 or. other'means for manually operating the shaft. Instead of arranging the shaft 5 close to the head. of the bed the same can be positioned adjacent the foot of the bed if desired. This arrangement is so obvious that it is not thought that illustration thereof will be necessary.

As shown in Fig. 3 the bed bottom can be hingedly connected to one side of the bed as at 14 in which event said bed bottom is preferably provided with two hangers 15 pivotally connected to the end portions thereof and each having its lower extremity crooked as at 16 and connected to a longitudinal shaft 17 by means of a cable, chain or other flexible device 18. It will thus be seen that when shaft 17 is rotated the two devices 18 can be wound thereon and will pull the crooked portions of the hangers on to the shaft so as to support said hangers and the bed bottom in elevated ositions.

By constructing a becfwith a movable bottom suchvas herein described the same is particularly designed for use by invalids. Im-

portance is attached to the fact that this con struction dispenses with the use of pawls and ratchets for the purpose of locking the bed bottom in an elevated position. Moreover, the shaft 5 constitutes a guide and support for the loop 8 and holds it at all times out of contact with the floor so that there is no danger of injury thereby to carpet or other floor covering. While it has been stated that the bed is articularly designed for medical and surgical purposes it is to be understood that it can also be employed for ordinary uses and by providing a bed bottom which is movable in the manner described the airing of the mattress can be greatly facilitated and it is possible to more readily clean under the bed simply by raising the bottom of the bed.

What is claimed is:

1. The combination with a bed and winding means journaled thereon; of a bed bottom hingedly connected to the bed, a member pivotally connected toand depending from the bed bottom, said member being held by gravity in constant contact with the winding means, and a flexible connection between the winding means and said member, said connection being disposed to direct said mem her into engagement with the winding means to hold the bed bottom at a predetermined angle to the bed.

2. The combination with a bed and windmg means journaled thereon; of a bed bottom hingedly connected to the bed, a member pivotally connected to and depending from the bed. bottom, said member being shaped to engage the winding means to hold the bed bottom at a predetermined angle to the bed, and a flexible connection between the winding means and said member, said winding means being disposed to guide said member out of contact with the surface on 20 which the bed is resting.

3. The combination with a bed and a shaft journaled thereon; of a bed bottom hingedly connected to the bed, a member pivotally connected to the bed bottom and having a shaft engaging terminal, and a flexible connection between the shaft and said member for directing said terminal onto the shaft to sup ort the bottom at a predetermined ang e.
