KTof 8 85fl9 26. Specification of Application filed December 8 To all whom it may concern:
Be it' known'that 1 JOHN Hons'r, a citizen of the United States, residin atjHubbell, in the county 'of Hon hton an 'State of Michi This invention relatesto pipe wrenches,-
novel form of wr'enc to e emp oyed' for tube sheetsor headers.
A further object of the invention is to proclamped with any desired degree of force on the end of a pipe or tube, the wrench being provided with means for enga ement by any suitable operating device, sue as a keyor monkey-wrench. i
With these and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of arts, here inafter fully described, illustrated in theac companyin drawings and particularly point.
structure may be made without departing from the s irit or sacrificing ans of the advanta eso the invention. I In t e accompanying drawings :--Fi e 1" is a sectional elevation of a ipe wrenc c onstructed in accordance wit Fig; 2 is a transverse section through ,the wed es and cup. Fig. 3is a view of the body oft e device with the. movable parts removed. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the clamping blocks. 1 A
S'nnlar'numerals of reference are employed.- to indicate corresponding parts throughout the several 15 res of the drawings.
The main ody of the wrenchcomprises a threaded stem 10 having at its'upper end a non-circular portion 11 for the rece tion of a wrench or operatingkey by'which t e device is turned and at the lower end of the threadedstem'a tubular cup 12 arranged 'to receive the end of the pipe or tube m which is to be screwed or unscrewed. I The cup '12 is provided with a plurality of vertically disposed grooves 15, ofi'g'raduall increasing depth from the bottom upwar and the inner walls of saidgrooves are prefer.- ably rounded. These grooves are arranged clamping blocks the invention.
Letters Patent. Patented April 28,1908. 0, 1901. Serial No teaser 16, the inner faces of which are provided with teeth or serrations 17 adapted to bite into the operated upon. The we ge shaped blocks eXtend-abovethe top'of the cup and are provided with grooves 18 which are arranged to at the lower end of a nut 20, the nut being internally threaded to fit upon the threaded stem 10, and as the nut is turned, the wedge blocks will be moved in the direction of the length of the pipe and their serrated inner pige or tube as.
npractice, the nut 20 is turned u wward until the several wedge shaped bloc s are spaced to an extent sufficient to permit the introduction of the tube or pipe 00, after which the nut is turned down and the wed. e blocks are forced tightly against the peri cry of the tube or pipe, the serrations 17 )iting into the tube to such an extent as to prevent slipping when the wrench is turned.
' Any ordinary form of socket or nut wrench may then be applied to the non-circular portion 11 of the stem and turned for the purpose of screwing or unscrewing the tube.
5 While in. the present instance three wedge shaped clamping blocks have been shown, it is to be understood that the number may be the size of the tube to be operated upon. I claim 1. In a pipe wrench, a body portion comprising a t readed stem, and a guide, ter. being provided with ta ered grooves, wedge shaped clamping bloc s arranged in the grooves, a nut mounted on the threaded stem, and, means for connecting the nut to said clamping blocks.
2. In a wrench of the class described, a body portion comprising a stem havinga non-circular portion at one end and provided at the opposite end with a cup, the inner wall of the cup having ta ered grooves, a plurality of wedge shaped c ampin blocks mounted in the grooves and provi ed with serrated portions of said blocks being grooved, and an adjusting nut mounted on the threaded stem andhaving an internal flange fitting within the grooves of the wedge blocks.
3. In a pi e wrench, a cup arranged for the rece tion 0 the end of a pipe, a tapered for the reception of a series of wedge shaped mg longitudinally thereof, a wedge shaped pipe or tube w to be receive an internal flange 19 that is arranged faces moved into or out of contact with the clamping faces, the outer faces of the upper increased or diminished in accordance with the latui e groove formed in said cup extend-v clamping block carried by said cup in said grow 1, and 111mm for forcing the block into engagement with the pipe.
in 2 pi e wrench, a. cup zuranged for the reception 01' the end of 2'1. pipe, a tapered guide groove formed in said cu? extending longitudinally thereof, a weuge shaped clamping block provided with a serrated face carried by said cup in said groove, and
