GEORGE C. EGLY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
mi'r'rniamacmim NEEDLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. EGLY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, 'Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Knitting-Machine Needle, of which the following is. a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in knitting machine needles, ofthat class having an integral off-set below the butt. I have devised a novel construction of needle wherein I dispense with the brass sleeve or s acing device attached to the.butt of the nee 1e andin lieu thereof form an integral off-set below the needle butt, since I extend the needle butt downwardly and laterally and then u wardly and bendtheupward terminal of t esame at or near the extremity thereof, thereby providing. a slight off-set, whereby the desired function is' attained.
To the above ends, m inventionconsists of a needle comprising a 0d portion havingits butt deflected downwar v y, laterally an upwardly, the jterminal of said upward extension being provided with an oil-set whereb a needle of superior utility can be efficientl produced, and will-not be liable to get out 0 order.
' My tures of construction, all as will be hereinafter full set forth and pointed out in the claims. a
i ure 1 re resents a side elevation of a invention consists of need e embo ying'my invention, showing also the needle 0 lmder and skeleton cylinder of the usual construction employed in conjunction therewith. 2 represents an end elevation of Fig. 1. .ig. 3 represents an end-elevation of a plurality of needles embodying my invention inassembled position, illustrating the function attained by my novel device. Figs. 4 and 5 represent other embodiments of mv invention.
Similar numera of reference indicate corresponding parts in the -Referr1ng to drawings :1 designates my novel cons uction of needle, the same com risin the cod .ortion 2 at the u er P g y F PP extremity of which is ocated the latch 3 and the hOOli 4 of the usual construction.
5 designates the butt of the needle, the latter having depending therefrom the extension 6 which is substantially in line .with
the body portion 2 and is continued laterally at 7 and upwardly at 8, the terminal 9 of other novel fea- Patented April 21, 190.8.
' said upward extension being (provided with an off-set which begins as m icated at the point 10'.
1 1 designates a needle cylinder of the usual construction, and 12 a. skeleton cylinder employed in conjunction therewith.
13 designates the needle rest attached to the cam cylinder 14, which latter parts are of the usual construction, and since the-same form no part of my present invention, require no further-descriptlom In Figs. 1 and 3 I have shown the manner of assembling my novel construction of needle, it being apparent that b reason of the extensions 6 each needle is he (1 in proper relation with res ect to the re lar needle cylinder 11 and t e skeleton c der 12, as will be apparent from 1, w ile by reason of the employment of t e; terminals or the oil-sets 9 it will be seen that each needle is 'spaced in proper relation with respect to its ne' hbor or a jacent needle. v t will be further apparent that by the employment of my move device, the needles are spaced from'each other to the desired fiected to the side of the needle body 0 ositely to that shown in Figs. 2 and 3, ti l notion of the off-set terminal being the same, while in 5 I have shown 'the terminal 18 as being split and having 'a member deflected to both sides ofthe needle as coming within the spirit of my invention.
As seen Fig. 1 the lateral portion 7 is of greater l'e th than the combined width of the vertica portions 6 and 8 so as to provide a material space. between the two lastnamed portions, as shown, so as to bring the portion 8 out of vertical line withthe s ank of the needle and the terminal 9. nearer the outer end of the butt.
extent and at the same time the needles are permitted to be somewhat closer together In Fig. 4 I have shown the terminal 9 dei 2 d I V 885,590-
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
1. As an improved article of manufacture, aknitting needle having a butt, a portion of s aid bntt being deflected downwardly and thence laterally in roximity to and parallel with the butt and thence upwardly at a distance from said downwardly deflected portion, the terminal of the u ward extension bein%1provided.with an 0 set out of the plane of t e butt and out of the plane of the downwardly deflected portion.
2. an improved article of manufacture, a knitting needle havinaa butt, a portion of said b'utt being defiec d downwardly and thencelaterally in (proximity to and arallel with the butt an thence upwar y at a distance from said downwardly deflected portion, the terminal of said upward extension bei s lit and having a member deflected to 0t sides ofthebod of the needle.
