Description

No. 885,582. PATENTEDAPR. 21, 1908.

\ I I x INVENTOH BALE L.EUHTT BALIE LITER BURTT, OF JEFFERSONVILLE, INDIANA.
COAL-BUCKE T.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 21, 1908.
Application filed May 11, 1907. Serial No. 373,020.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BALIE LITER BURTT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jeffersonville, in the county of Clark and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal-Buckets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in coal buckets; the object of my invention being to provide a bucket which may be used as a hod for pouring coal into a stove as well as a storage bucket from which the coal may be taken by a shovel and one by means of which coal may be poured from the same into another receptacle without causing dust to arise, as is usual in the type commonly used.
With these objects in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construc tion, arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the specification, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my inproved bucket, I ig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
In carrying out my invention I construct the sides A A and bottom B of the bucket from a single piece of material the bottom being formed on a continuous or unbroken curve and the forward end C being pitched higher than the rear end D, the front of the bucket being also curved horizontally, while the rearv of the bucket presents a straight line across forming angular corners.
To the bucket is secured a base or standard E which is preferably rectangular in shape and located with a greater portion to the rear of the vertical center of the bucket.
To the sides of the bucket are secured the usual ears F F, to which are pivotally secured the ends of the bail or handle G.
To the outer surface of the rear wall of the bucket is secured the handhold H to be used in manipulating the bucket, when used to pour coal into a stove, furnace or the like.
To the forward part of the bucket I may apply the hood I, the lower edges of which are secured within the side walls of the bucket, and. the upper wall I of said hood is preferably inclined downwardly toward the front of the bucket, but the front edge of the hood does not extend quite to the front edge of the bucket. By inclining the top wall I of the hood downwardly toward the front the coal within the bucket will be concentrated to a smaller space when pouring the same into a stove or furnace.
hen it is desired to take coal from the bucket it may be readily done by means of a common house. shovel either from the rear end or the forward end, as the bottom of the bucket is a single and continuous curve and offers no obstruction to the passage of a shovel within the bucket.
The hood I may be omitted entirely if so desired, and the bail or handle is of such dimensions that even when dropped on the edge of the bucket, it will not offer any obstruction to the free introduction of a shovel, but will lie entirely within the front or rear edges of the bucket body.
\Vith the construction herein shown and described, the bucket may be used as a storage boX or as a hod to pour coal into a stove, furnace, or the like, and by virtue of the single and continuous curve of the bottom, a shovel can be readily inserted in either the front or rear end, and coal may be removed therefrom without causing dust to arise.
By the construction shown, when it is desired to use a small quantity of coal, it may be readily taken from the rear of the bucket by a small shovel, without it being necessary to lift the bucket at all, which is a decided desideratum to weakly or delicate persons.
The sides of the base extend upwardly on the sides of the bucket and form a reinforcement therefor.
What I claim is:
A coal bucket consisting of sides, front, rear and bottom made from a single sheet of material, the front wall being curved horizontally and the rear wall and sides forming angular corners, the bottom and front and rear walls formed on a single or continuous curve, the front edge of the bucket being pitched higher than the rear edge, a rectangular base or standard secured to the bottom, a curved hood disposed adjacent to the front edge of the bucket, the upper wall of said hood inclined downwardly to the front and a bail or handle secured to the sides of the bucket at about its vertical center, said bail when dropped lying within the front or rear edges of the bucket body.
