DOOR-OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
latented April 21, 1908.
Application filed. February 18, 1908. Serial No. 416,494.
To all whom'fit may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR E. BERG- QUIs'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lindstrom, in the county ol Chisago and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Im rovements in Door-Openers, of which the following is a specific ation.
This invention relates to door openers, and the object of the invention is to provide an extremely simple and eflicient device ol" this character, primarily intended 'for use in connection with screen or storm doors, whereby the door may be readily opened by the loot of an operator, thus leavingl his hands-cntirely free.
Another object of the invention is to provide a foot operated door opener provided with means, consisting of a spring, whereby the door is automatically closed after the pressure upon the door opener has been released.
With these objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction ol' elements and their arrangement in operative comlkeeper is secured upon the door.
clined and inwardly projecting arm 12.
bination, hereinafter 'fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a' door provided with my improvrnl o ening' device. Fig. 2 is a perspective view ot the device. Fig. 3 is a Vfront elevation of the keeper. Fig'. 4 is a top plan view ot' the same.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates a door frame, 2 the sill, and 3 the door within the frame.
Connected to the sill 2 by suitable clips or bearings 4, is a door operating device 5. This operating device comprises a bar 6 extending longitudinally of the sill 2, and having,- one of its ends offset to provide a lioot lever 6. The opposite `end of the bar 6 is provided .with a right angular oi'lset 7, having;l its free end bentupwardly and inclined inwardly towards the door to provide the linger 8.
Positioned upon the stile ot' the door 3 to which the hinges are attached is a keeper Q. This keeper 9 comprises a bearing` face 10, havingI suitable openings and ears also provided with openings adapted for the reception of retaining elements by which lthe he keeper is provided with a suitable bend 11, from which is projected a downwardly in- The j keeper 9 is adapted to be positioned upon the door 3 at a point adj acont to the end of the finger 8, and this 'linger 8 is adapted to lie normally, when the door is closed, within the lbend 1l between the bearing' face 1() and the arm 12 oi the keeper. lith this'construction it will be seen that when pressure is eX- erted upon the loot lever 6, it causes the bar 6 to rotate within its bearings Ll, and the [in- `ger S to contact and slide along the arm l2, thus effectively opening the door. When the door is closed the Iinger 8 contacts the bearing face 10 ol" the keeper, thus forcing the door closed when the arm 6 is provided with a coil spring 13, havingI one ol its ends 14, attached to the sill 2, as illustrated in Fig'. 1 ofthe drawings.
It will be apparent that the opener may be eflectively employed on doors provided with spring hinges, and in this case the spring 13 may be dispensed with.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a simple, cheap and effective opening' device for doors, which is adapted to vbe operated by the pressure of a persons foot, thus leaving the arms of the operator entirely lree, and one which will automatically close the door after the pressure upon the operating' device has been released.
Having` thus lully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. The combination with. a door frame and a door therefor, of a bar extending longitudinally with the sill of the door and secured in bearings thereto, the bar being provided with' l oilisetsat both oi its ends, and a keeper secured to the door, said keeper providing a bearing` face and a bent arm and adapted for engagement with one of the oilsets of the bar. 2. T he combination with door frame and a door therefor, of a bar extending,l longitudinally of the sill of the door and mounted in bearings thereon, o'i'l'sets upon each end of the bar, a coil spring connected with the bar and with the sill, and a keeper comprising a bearingl face and an inclined inwardly extending' arm secured to the door and adapted for engagement with one ofthe oilsets ofthe bar. ln testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR E. BERGQUIST.
