of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and'useful Improvements in Snap-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in snap fasteners and has for its obj ect to design. a fastener of this type in which the two members are securely locked a ainst becoming accidentally detached an can only be separated by first moving one of them laterally against the direction of the pull exerted thereon by the two sections of the garment or other members being connected by the fastener.
The invention also aims to provide a snap fastener in which both the socket and key have a flattened formation and are prevented from having any relative rotary movement, thereby eliminating the common tendency of the garments to gap due to this cause.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view showing a snap fastener applied. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the socket member. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is a. detached perspective of the key plate.
Corresponding and like arts are referred to in thefollowin description and indicated in all the views 0 the drawings by the same reference characters.
In general the snap fastener comprises a socket plate 1 provided with a socket 2 and designed to be attached to one of the members being connected, and a key plate 3 carrying a key 4 havin an interlocking counectlon with the soc ct 2 and designed to be secured to the opposite member being connected. The mouth of the socket 2 has the sides thereof rounded to guide the key i into the base or body ortion of the socket which has a flattened ormation, being contracted laterally and elongated longitudinally. Cuts or incisions 5 are formed in opposite ends of the socket 2 at points adjaccnt the socket plate 1, one of the incisions receiving a laterally disposed spring arm 6, while the opposite incision permits the key spring wire to engage a portion of the socket plate 1 forming a square shoulder 7, the socket r0- jccting over the said shoulder. The e ges of the socket plate 1 are returned upon themselves roarwardly to form the annular channel 8 receiving the curved ends of a piece of 9, an intermediate portion of which is crimped at 10, the said crimped portion being formed with a flattened loop one side of which constitutes the before mentioned spring arm 6 received withirr one of the incisions 5.
The key 4 which is preferably located centrally of the key plate 3 has a flattened formation corresponding to the'socket 2 and when in position within the latter the key plate is locked against any rotary movement relative to the socket plate. The nose of the key 4 is inclined in o posite directions in-the usual manner while t 1e base of the key is provided at its opposite ends with notches forming the approximately square shoulders 11 engaging respectively the spring arm 6 and the shoulder 7 of the socket plate. The length of the socket 2 is slightly greater than the length of the key 4 so that the latter is permitted to have a limited amount of backward and forward play when in position within the socket. The two members are pressed together in the usual manner; one of the shoul'ers 11 upon the key, being ongaged by the spring 6 While the opposite shoulder engages the square shoulder 7 of the socket' It may here be mentioned that when applying the plates to the members designed to be connected by the fastener the socket plate 1 is so positioned that the s uare shoulder 7 is on the side toward wlich the/pull is exerted b the key. It will thus be a parent that the tendency of the members being connected to pull apart draws the s uare shoulders 11 and 7 of the key and soc 'et res actively into a firm engagement with eac other, and that when in this position the said shoulders have an interlocking connection which prevents the socket plate andthe key plate from bein i separated. Attention may also be directe to the fact that the action of'the s ring 6 is such as to norn'ially hold the be ore mentioned shoulders in engagement with each other. In order to detach the two lates it is necessary to move one of them aterally against the ull of the members bein connected by tie fastener and against the action of the spring 6 until the square shoulder der 7 of the socket, whereupon the two lates may be opened apart. ;It will thus e seen that the motion required for unsna ping the members is a simple, natural,- an nick one, being similar to that reiuire for detaching a hook from an eye. he two plates 1 and 3 may be applied tothe sections of the garmentin any, suitable menner and for this purpose. are shown in the resent instance as provided with the openlngs 12 which admit oftheir being sewed to the garment.
Having thus described the invention, what isclaimed as new is; A
1. In a fastener, the combination of at socket plate provided with a socket having a shou der on one side thereof and an incision in the opposite side, a spring arm carried by the socket plate and received by the said incision, and a key plate carrying a key designed to he received-within the socket and ;having opposite sides thereof notched,the said-key being movable laterally within the socket to permit one of the notches to be moved into and out of engagement with the shoulder of the socket, the opposite notch being yieldingly engaged by the-s ring arm.
