Be itknown that I, SIDNEY P. DODGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Unit in the county of Williams and State of O io, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat Hangers and Markers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

My invention relates to im rovements in devices for hanging hats or te like upon a rack or other su ort. y

One object o t e invention is to rovide a simple and inexpensive hanger of t 's character which may be conveniently carried in oncs pocket and readily attached to one's hat so that it may be conveniently hung upon any sort of rack in such manner that there will be little or no danger of it being knocked off.

Another object of the invention is to provide a hanger of this character which may be engaged with the buttonhole in the lapelof an overcoat or with a buttonhole in any other garment.`

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character with means for displaying the name'and address of the owner or any other distinguishing mark by means of which it may be identified and the owner may readily locate his hat, coat `or other belongings placed in the oloakj rooms of hotels or other public laces.

With the above and ot er objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of arts hereinafter described and claimed, and) illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which j Figure 1 is a view showing two uses of my improved hanging and" marking device; Fig.

The invention consists of a pending ring or loop 2 and an marking button 3. The clasp 1 is here shown as consisting of a bottom member 4 formed of sheet metall and having at one of itsk ends a flat jaw 5 and its other end 7 bent around a flattened portion 8 of the ring or loop 2 which latter is of substantially circular form. Intermediate the ends of the 'member or plate 4 are formed at its opposite sides apertured bearing ears 9 which are bent up clasp 1, a sus? attaching and at right angles and are adapted to register with similar ears 10 similarly arranged upon the top or outer member 11 of the clasp. This member is also preferably formed of a piece of sheet metal and has a linger piece 12 at one end and its other end curved., as shown 1n Fig. 3, to provide a flat jaw 13 which coy acts with the jaw 5. These jaws are pressed together and upon the hat or other article inserted between them by a coil spring 14 which surrounds a pivot pin 15 passed through the alining apertures in the'bearing ears 9, 10, said spring having its ends bearing against the inner faces of the members 4, 11, as shown in Fig. 3. The provision of the flat jaws 5, 13 permit them to readily engage the rim of a hat and the curvature of the jaw 13 provides sufficient space between the inortions of said jaws for the reception of the bead upon the rim of a derby and hence causes the clasp to more effectively hold such a hat, as will be readily understood. Said button or device 3 comprises a back plate 16 of circular shape formed with an annular bead or rim 17 and with an integral centrally disposed and rearwardly projecting shank 18 transversely va ertured to receive the ring 2, as clearl) shown in Fig. 3. The back plate 16 forms 1 a chamber for the reception of a disk 19 of paper or other suitable material upon which may Abe printed, written, or otherwise vmarked, the name and address of the owner vof the'device, -Or any lother desired information. The disk 19is preferably covered by a disk 20 `of celluloid or other transparent material which will disks are retaine upon the back plate by a front plate or rim 21 having a central opening to expose the disks or plates 19, 20 and aving an annular rim or flange 22 to engage the rim or flange 17 of the back plate.
